Seam Welder Operator

Job Summary

An individual contributor position responsible for operating the Sub Arc Seam Welder to weld the seams of steel shafts. The Operator typically loads shafts into the welding machine with a conveyor or an overhead crane and operates the seam weld positioning tuners. The Operator also positions the piece through the weld head(s) as the weld is deposited to make a pole, adjusts carriage speeds, side roll pressures, amperage, and flux flow, and may assist with or operate an overhead crane or forklift in material or supply movement.

The Operator monitors the quality of incoming steel and determines when material is substandard, reporting damage to the Utility Person or Lead Person. When the machine is not running, the operator may be assigned to other work areas in production.

• Load steel shafts into the Sub Arc Seam Welder machine.
• Weld the entire seam of the steel shaft to produce a steel pole.
• Monitor the quality of incoming steel shafts and determine when material is substandard.
• Operate a straightener to straighten the shafts after welding.
• Use precision measuring instruments to verify that finished product meets specifications.

• Accurately read a tape measure.
• Pass an AWS welder operator qualification test for submerged arc welding (SAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW).
• Set up, operate, and perform general maintenance of equipment without difficulty.
• Make mathematical calculations to prepare product or adjust machinery.
• Read and decipher blueprints and flat sheets without assistance and use them to properly weld scheduled work.

• No degree required.
• Minimum of 3+ years of relevant experience.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (most frequent lift up to 20 pounds).
• Read blueprints and use a tape measure.
• Be Valmont trained and certified in operation of forklift.
• High awareness for safety at all times.

• One year of previous experience in a professional welding position.
• Experience with PLC controlled machinery.
• Attention to detail and ability to follow work instructions.
• Effective communication and positive interaction with coworkers.
• Passion, integrity, drive to excel and deliver exceptional results.
• AWS certified welder operator qualification for both SAW and GMAW processes.
