Position Overview

The Metrology Lead serves as the site Subject Matter Expert (SME) and operational team leader for ALK’s site-wide Metrology Program. Reporting directly to Engineering/Maintenance Management, this role bridges hands-on instrumentation expertise with cross-functional leadership—guiding Metrology Specialists I–III, overseeing calibration scheduling via CMMS (Blue Mountain RAM), and ensuring strict cGMP compliance during internal and regulatory audits.

Core Responsibilities
  • Lead daily workflows, task assignments, and resource allocation for Metrology Specialists (Levels I–III).
  • Onboard, mentor, and build technical competency frameworks for junior calibration staff.
  • Oversee site calibration schedules, track Metrology KPIs, and manage data integrity within the CMMS (Blue Mountain RAM).
Technical Execution & Compliance
  • Perform high-level calibration, preventive maintenance, loop checks, and troubleshooting on complex analytical, laboratory, and process control instrumentation.
  • Lead Out-of-Tolerance (OOT) investigations, non-conformances, deviations, and CAPAs in compliance with cGMP/FDA standards.
  • Act as the primary Metrology SME during internal, customer, and regulatory agency (FDA/EMA) audits.
Engineering & Continuous Improvement
  • Partner with Facilities and Process Engineering on new equipment procurement, commissioning, IQ/OQ/PQ protocols, and calibration routine definitions.
  • Identify and execute continuous improvement initiatives to streamline calibration workflows, minimize equipment downtime, and improve measurement reliability.
  • Manage critical spare parts inventory, calibration standards, and specialized test equipment.
Candidate Qualifications
  • Education:

    Associate’s degree in Instrumentation, Metrology, Electronics/EET, Mechatronics, or Engineering Technology OR equivalent hands-on military/industrial technical experience.
  • Experience:

    4+ years of progressive calibration, instrumentation, or metrology experience in a regulated manufacturing environment (GMP, Medical Device, Aerospace, or Utilities).
  • Leadership:
    Demonstrated experience leading workflows, mentoring technicians, or acting as a formal SME/Lead.
  • Physical/Environmental:
    Ability to work safely in environments containing insect venoms, biological allergens, and laboratory reagents using required PPE.
Preferred Qualifications (High-Value Skillset):
  • Experience in an FDA-regulated cGMP, Pharmaceutical, or Biotech facility. (removed years listed as

  • Advanced proficiency with Blue Mountain RAM or similar Enterprise CMMS platform.
  • Experience writing and executing instrument validation protocols, SOPs, and formal root-cause analysis (5-Why, Fishbone) for OOT investigations.
