St. Andrew’s Episcopal School is a private, coeducational college preparatory day school for students in preschool (Age
2) through grade 12, located in Potomac, Maryland.
We seek a creative, energetic, and visionary educator to become the Lower School Arts Teacher. This position is responsible for developing and implementing art curriculum from preschool through Grade 1.
Key Responsibilities- Instruct art classes in preschool and early elementary classrooms.
- Prepare and update course objectives, outlines, and lesson plans for art classes, following departmental curriculum mapping guidelines and school planning requirements.
- Maintain discipline and a suitable learning environment for students based on the principles of Responsive Classroom, both in the art studio and throughout the school day.
- Conduct and document informal and formal assessment of individual student performance, and compile a portfolio of student work to illustrate progress towards grade-level expectations.
- Communicate individual student academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements with parents in trimester report cards and teacher conferences.
- Create art class displays featuring student work on bulletin boards throughout the school on a regular basis.
- Organize and coordinate class field trips as appropriate or requested.
- Serve as Lower School Lion/Cub Program Coordinator, working closely with the Upper and Middle School Coordinators and Division Heads in planning and coordinating monthly activities and events throughout the year for Middle and Upper School Lions, with their Lower School buddies.
- Teach an after-school art class each trimester or work weekday afternoons in the Extended Day program during the calendar school year.
- Construct and assist with backdrops, scenery, and costumes for school productions and assemblies as requested.
- Collaborate with the Lower School Art teacher (Grades 2-5) and other special subject teachers for end‑of‑year signature divisional events, including the Design Science Fair, Young Authors and Artists Festival, Spring Performances, and Visual Arts Celebration.
- Support and constructively collaborate with homeroom and special subject teachers on arts integration and interdisciplinary projects across the division and departmental initiatives with arts teachers in the middle and upper divisions.
- Perform other related duties, such as lunch coverage, recess proctoring, and carpool support.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings, department meetings, professional workshops, and committee meetings.
- Support the Episcopal identity of the Institution.
- Background in early childhood or elementary education.
- Demonstrated understanding of child development.
- Experience working in a preschool or elementary setting, with at least two years of teaching experience, is preferred.
