SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION

At the direction of the principal, this para educator performs a variety of tasks that promote student learning and well‑being to support students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP). The para educator may be required to participate with students in learning activities off school grounds and to assist with academic, behavioral, social, emotional, and physical support. The work focuses on facilitating mastery of grade‑level curriculum or Alternate Academic Achievement Standards and managing behaviors that impact a student’s ability to access the curriculum.

Students supported at this level typically participate in general education classes and specialized instructional settings throughout the day and may be pulled out for individualized or small‑group instruction. This position also performs instructional and classroom management supports and related clerical tasks to support teachers and staff in all classrooms or learning environments. All new para educators are hired at grade 15 and have the opportunity to promote to grade 16 after successfully completing a six‑month probationary period and the required training hours.

Paraeducators in this class support the following special education services: PEP, Transition, DHOH, Speech, Vision, Physical Impairments, Elementary Learning Center, Bridge, Autism Resource Services (ARS), and Autism Connections.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Frequent bending, walking, and lifting of objects or equipment up to 50 pounds may be required. Must be able to accommodate flexible scheduling and change of location and/or program, as needed. Outside duty may be required. This position may require specific training to successfully fulfill the role.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of child development, instructional strategies, and practices applicable to the assignment, and instructional goals and policies of Montgomery County Public Schools. Ability to assist with implementation of the instructional program, to monitor and ensure appropriate student behavior, to exhibit patience, and to work effectively with children, young adults, and staff members. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, to perform required tasks, and to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Ability to read, write, and speak English, interact with and support students with special needs, use standard computer hardware and software such as Google Workspace, MS Office, and web‑based instructional tools, and learn quickly to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
  • Associate’s degree, required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. College coursework should include at least nine credit‑hours related to education, such as behavior management or instructional strategies.
  • One year of experience working with students in structured educational situations preferred. If no related coursework, then two to four years of experience working with children and adolescents in a structured setting such as a daycare or pre‑school is required.
  • At least 48 college credits and two years of experience in a structured setting such as a daycare, pre‑school, adult day program, after‑school program, extended day, or school/non‑school based department is required.
  • Successful completion of the Para Pro Assessment with a qualifying score of 455 or higher is required.
  • Any combination of applicable education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
