SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION:
The prekindergarten program provides comprehensive services focused on early learning, health and family well‑being through individualized learning experiences, play, and planned instruction, covering areas such as social skills, emotional well‑being, language, literacy, math, and science. At the direction of the principal, this para educator performs a variety of tasks that promote school readiness and well‑being for students ages three to five. The position also includes instructional and classroom‑management supports and related clerical tasks to support teachers and other professional staff in all types of classrooms or learning environments.
All new para educators are hired at grade 15 and may be promoted to grade 16 after successfully completing a six‑month probationary period and the required training hours.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Frequent bending, walking, and lifting of objects/equipment up to 50 pounds may be required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Outside duty may be required. Must accommodate flexible scheduling and location changes as needed. Continuously plan instructional activities during a teacher’s temporary absence from the classroom.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of child development and instructional strategies applicable to the assignment.
- Ability to assist with implementation of the instructional program and to monitor student behavior.
- Patience and effective collaboration with children, young adults, and staff.
- Follow written and verbal instructions and perform all required tasks.
- Effective oral and written communication in English.
- Support students with special needs.
- Knowledge of standard computer hardware and software, including Google Workspace, MS Office, and web‑based instructional tools.
- Ability to quickly learn and meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND
EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree preferred. College coursework must include at least nine credit‑hours related to education, behavior management, or instructional strategies. One year of experience working with students in structured educational situations is preferred. If lacking coursework, two to four years of experience in a structured setting (e.g., daycare, pre‑school) is required.
