WHO WE ARE

The Department of General Services, The Division of Facilities Management (DFM) delivers operational and mission critical services 24 hours a day seven days a week on behalf of County residents and Montgomery County Government. DFM manages over 400 County buildings, ensuring they are maintained at the highest level to provide a comfortable environment for employees and the public.

What You'll Be Doing

Employee will perform skilled maintenance and repair work on various plumbing systems and fixtures, fire sprinklers and other major systems and equipment. The work will be performed indoors and outside and can be dirty, dusty, and greasy. It involves occasional exposure to noxious odors, chemicals and solvents, and human or animal waste, for which use of safety or protective equipment/clothing is required.

Duties include installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing and sanitary fixtures, restoration and repair of various plumbing systems and correction of leaks, reading and interpreting plans and specifications to ensure that completed work meets building code requirements. Applicants must also be able to work any fixed shift for 5 consecutive days, which may include evening shifts or weekends.

This position is considered Essential and employees are required to respond or may be placed on stand-by duty during severe weather or other urgent conditions.

Employee must have the ability to work standby shifts and respond to after-hours emergency service calls. Work schedule may change to include weekends and/or evenings as part of the regular workweek.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

Completion of a recognized Apprentice Plumber program.

Education:

Graduation from high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.

Equivalency:
None.

Physical Ability:
Ability to occasionally lift items that weigh as much as 100 pounds and to frequently carry 50 pound items. Ability to perform work inside and outside year-round, where it may be necessary to work from above or in stretched, cramped or awkward or tiring and uncomfortable positions.

LICENSE:

  • Possession and maintenance at all times of valid driver's license.
  • Possession of valid Journey level Plumber's, Gas Fitters, and Sewer Cleaner's licenses issued by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC)
    Possession of WSSC certification to install, repair and maintain backflow prevention devices when required for job-related duties. Please include license number on resume.
Montgomery County Benefits

Our generous leave package starts with non-MLS permanent and term employees earning 15 days of sick leave and 15 days of annual leave in their first year, as well as up to three additional personal days each calendar year. Positions in MLS earn 35 days of paid time off each year. In addition, we offer all employees 10 paid holidays. Our leave policies adhere to the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993, and we provide six weeks of paid parental leave for new parents.

All permanent and term positions are eligible for robust retirement plans. Public safety positions are eligible for a defined benefit pension plan in which they are vested after only five years. Employees in non-public safety positions can participate in retirement plans that contribute up to 12 percent of their annual salary. All employees can also participate in a supplemental retirement plan, the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, to contribute even more to their retirement goals.

Montgomery County employees are eligible to participate in the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Participants who meet all requirements may qualify for forgiveness on the remaining balance on their Direct Loans after making 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time in a qualifying public service position.
