Job Summary

To direct and manage all facets of the grocery department in a manner designed to obtain maximum sales, productivity, and profits.

Essential Job Functions
  • Achieve necessary sales and profit goals as projected.
  • Supervise, train, and schedule all grocery department personnel to perform assignments according to department needs, while maintaining effective employee relations.
  • Assure proper ordering and allocation of merchandise to maintain an in‑stock and in‑code position.
  • Ensure accurate billing and pricing of all incoming products by posting the invoices and conducting pricing audits.
  • Submit required orders/grocery surveys to the office on schedule.
  • Order necessary supplies for the department on a regular basis.
  • Oversee and handle damaged and distressed merchandise according to policy.
  • Help maintain proper stock levels and present the store in a way that reflects a clean, neat, and well‑stocked image.
  • Assist other departments to ensure their operations are efficient.
  • Maintain and secure the receiving area and grocery department.
  • Greet all customers and remain observant on the sales floor.
  • Maintain a neat personal appearance according to the company’s dress code policy.
  • Directly oversee the entire 3rd shift operation, including the productivity of all 3rd shift associates.
  • Calculate piece counts for all clerks as a productivity measure.
  • Follow and enforce all company policies and procedures as stated in the Employee Handbook.
Supplemental Job Functions
  • Direct and monitor the entire store operation in the absence of the Store Director and Assistant Store Director, approximately 15% to 20% of the scheduled shift.
  • Maintain a file for weekly sales plans (records of quantities sold) and recap these to the store manager.
  • Review management reports related to the Assistant Store Director’s responsibilities to become knowledgeable about departmental performance.
  • Work on the 3rd shift as needed to train new overnight managers.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills And Ability Required
  • High school education required.
  • At least three years of experience working in the supermarket industry.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for dealing with customers, employees, and vendors.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, gross margins, percentages, proportions, ratios, and volume using basic algebra.
  • Ability to verify vendor invoices, counts, and complete required accounting reports including inventory and receiving.
  • Must be able to lift up to fifty pounds (50 lbs.) approximately seventy percent (70%) of the time.
  • Ability to retrieve and place merchandise on top racks in the grocery aisles properly; the top‑racking process may occupy 20% of the shift time.
  • Must be able to stand upright for most of your scheduled work shift.
