Job Description:
The American Sign Language (ASL) Professional Tutor will provide remote, and in-person tutoring to individuals and small groups and may work in various DCC locations. For this position, we are seeking a dedicated and qualified ASL Tutor to provide comprehensive support to students enrolled in ASL courses. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with ASL instructors, following a prescriptive framework, to deliver high- quality tutoring services that enhance students' language proficiency, cultural understanding, and overall success in ASL courses provided by the college.
The successful candidate will be passionate about fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment, dedicated to promoting ASL proficiency, and committed to the success of students in the ASL courses.
Under the supervision of the Tutoring Coordinator in the Center for Academic Achievement department, the ASL Professional Tutor will:
* Demonstrate a strong understanding of language teaching principles and methodologies.
* Facilitate one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions following the prescribed ASL curriculum.
* Provide constructive feedback and correction to students to improve their ASL skills.
* Possess advanced fluency in American Sign Language.
* Instruct students in ASL linguistics, including handshape, grammar, classifiers, non-manual markers, and other parameters.
* Demonstrate a proficiency in ASL glossing techniques.
* Have a working knowledge of Deaf Culture, Deaf History, ASL/Deaf Literature, and other relevant topics.
* Communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
* Mentor ASL students on cultural and social conventions within the contemporary Deaf community.
* Collaborate with ASL instructors to develop student goals and objectives.
* Have an aptitude with basic computer applications to support students' technological needs
* Thoroughly and accurately document tutoring sessions to meet reporting requirements.
* Assist and support students with course materials, along with ASL practice and projects.
* Reinforce study strategies, encourage independent learning, and model positive academic behavior.
* Recognize and respect students' diverse backgrounds.
* Demonstrate exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
* Manage technology needed to support specialized tutoring, including but not limited to Banner, Kronos, Tutor Trac, Bookings, D2L Brightspace, Google Suites, Starfish, and GoReact.
* Maintain consistent tutoring practices and build relationships with students.
* Participate in prospective student and first year programs including orientation, introductory seminar courses, and recruitment initiatives.
* Additional duties as assigned by the Tutoring Coordinator.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications
