Central Hudson is seeking an Engineer to join our Electric Construction Standards team. Standards Engineers perform engineering assignments related to the design of the company’s electric distribution transmission and substation construction systems, including analyzing and approving all materials used for construction. They also provide utilization support for customer connections to the company’s distribution system.

Responsibilities
  • Use computer-aided design software (AutoCAD, Visio, SPIDAcalc) to create construction standards and perform structural analyses of overhead systems.
  • Create distribution, transmission, and substation construction standards with safety, regulatory standards, and codes (including but not limited to NESC, RUS, ANSI/IEEE, ACSE) while keeping fellow employees and the public in mind.
  • Provide technical support for Electric Operations, Estimating, and New Business groups.
  • Develop and maintain specifications for all equipment used in substations and electric transmission and distribution systems (cable, switch gear, wire, transformers, pole and tower hardware).
  • Support the Supply Chain group in maintaining electric equipment stocking levels to avoid day‑to‑day operational disruptions.
  • Analyze performance of in‑service electric equipment and hardware to identify failure trends that may affect customer reliability and recommend remedial measures.
  • Interact with utility equipment manufacturers and suppliers to ensure specifications are met and maintain the highest quality assurance standards.
  • Collaborate with System Construction, Purchasing, Real Property, and Environmental groups for construction standard design work.
  • Collaborate with Substation and Transmission Design engineering groups, and Distribution Engineering groups for construction standard design and equipment specification writing.
  • Provide utilization support based on a strong NEC background.
  • Support QA/QC efforts for both underground and overhead distribution systems.
  • Represent Central Hudson in industry activities and organizations (IEEE, EPRI, etc.).
  • Support emergency storm restoration efforts.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to learn new computer software programs quickly.
  • Well‑developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills with innovation.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and quantitative skills.
  • Ability to perform all tasks safely and design with safety in mind.
  • Ability to voice opinions and lead discussions among industry groups.
  • Flexibility to multitask and operate under pressure in a fast‑paced work environment.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred

  • Professional Engineer license.
  • Proficiency in code interpretation such as NEC, NESC, and RUS.
  • Field of study in mechanical or electrical engineering.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in the electric and gas utility industry.
  • Work experience in a related engineering role.

Pay Range: $82,600 – $196,100. This position has a career path that allows for advancement opportunities within the Systems Analyst job series. The title and level are commensurate with experience.
