What is an Engineer
- Electric Construction Standards?

Central Hudson is seeking an Engineer to join our Electric Construction Standards team. Standards Engineers perform engineering assignments related to the design of the company's electric distribution transmission and substation construction systems, including analyzing and approving all materials used for construction. Standards Engineers also perform utilization support for customer connections to the company's distribution system.

What does an Engineer
- Engineering Standards do?
  • Uses computer-aided design software (AutoCAD, Visio, SPIDAcalc) to create construction standards and to perform structural analyses of overhead systems
  • Creates distribution, transmission and substation construction standards with safety, regulatory standards, and codes (including but not limited to NESC, RUS, ANSI/IEEE, ACSE), fellow employees, and the public in mind.
  • Provides technical support for the company's Electric Operations, Estimating and New Business groups
  • Develops and maintains specifications for all equipment used in the company’s substations, as well as on the company’s electric transmission and distribution systems, including (but not limited to) cable, switch gear, wire, transformers, pole and tower hardware.
  • Supports the Supply Chain group in maintaining electric equipment stocking levels to ensure that day‑to‑day operations are not negatively impacted.
  • Analyzes performance of the company’s in‑service electric equipment and hardware to determine failure trends that may have an impact on customer reliability and recommends any remedial measures.
  • Interacts with utility equipment manufacturers and suppliers to ensure that specifications are met and that the highest quality assurance measures are met.
  • Collaboratively works with the System Construction, Purchasing, Real Property, and Environmental groups for construction standard design work.
  • Collaboratively works with the Substation and Transmission Design engineering groups, as well as the Distribution Engineering groups for construction standard design work and equipment specification writing.
  • Provides utilization support based on a strong NEC background.
  • Supports QA/QC efforts for both the underground and overhead distribution systems.
  • Represents Central Hudson in industry activities and organizations (IEEE, EPRI, etc.).
  • Supports emergency storm restoration efforts.
What does it take to be an Engineer
- Electric Construction Standards?

Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to learn new computer software programs quickly
  • Well‑developed written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills with innovation in mind
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and quantitative skills
  • Ability to perform all tasks safely and design with safety in mind
  • Ability to voice opinions & lead discussions amongst industry groups
  • Flexibility to multitask and operate under pressure in a fast‑paced work environment
  • Valid driver’s license
Preferred
  • Professional Engineer license
  • Proficiency in code interpretation such as, but not limited to the NEC, NESC and RUS
  • Field of study in mechanical engineering or electrical engineering
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in the electric and gas utility industry
  • Work experience in a related engineering role

This position has a career path which allows for advancement opportunities within the Systems Analyst job series. The title and level are commensurate with experience. Pay Range: $82,600 - $196,100
