What Is a Government & Community Affairs Advisor

The Government & Community Affairs Advisor serves as a policy intelligence and coordination resource supporting the company’s government and community affairs strategy. This role is responsible for monitoring and tracking local, state, and federal legislative and regulatory developments, translating complex policy issues into clear business impacts, conducting policy research and producing legislative briefs, and helping coordinate government and community affairs activities across the organization.

The position also supports external engagement and ensures disciplined tracking, reporting, and execution of government and community affairs priorities.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, analytical, detail‑oriented, politically aware, and able to communicate complex issues clearly and professionally. Depending on experience and skillset, the individual may also support external engagement efforts with elected officials, trade associations, chambers of commerce, and community stakeholders.

What does a Government & Community Affairs Advisor do?
  • Monitors and analyzes local, state, and federal legislative and regulatory activity, with emphasis on utility, energy, and public policy impacts
  • Identifies emerging risks, opportunities, and implementation considerations for the business
  • Translates policy developments into concise, decision‑ready summaries, briefings, and presentations
  • Develops dashboards and reporting tools to track legislation, stakeholder engagement, and key initiatives Coordinate cross-functional reviews of policy developments and legislation with internal teams (e.g., regulatory, legal, finance, operations, policy) to ensure alignment and awareness
  • Serves as a liaison between Government Affairs and internal business units by translating policy developments into clear, actionable insights
  • Prepares policy summaries, briefing materials, presentations, and internal communications for leadership and subject matter experts
  • Supports engagement with external stakeholders, including policymakers, trade associations, and industry groups, and assist with preparation for meetings and public policy discussions
  • Manages timelines, deliverables, and documentation for government affairs initiatives, including maintaining organized legislative and community affairs records
  • Provides political outreach and coordination support during storm restoration and emergency response efforts
What does it take to be a Government & Community Affairs Advisor Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public affairs, government policy or related and experience in a government, public affairs, policy or related field. In lieu of a bachelors degree, an associate degree in the aforementioned fields and 3+ years of experience in a government, public affairs, policy or related field.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to distill complex topics into clear summaries
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and coordinate cross-functional views and inputs
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills and effective negotiating techniques to gain agreement
  • Valid driver’s license
Preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
  • 5+ years experience in a government, public affairs, policy or related field
