The Retail Pharmacy Technician II in the retail pharmacy setting will assist the pharmacists in the preparation, filling, insurance processing, and delivery of prescriptions under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. The role also includes supporting the pharmacist with inventory management, ensuring proper medication storage, and adherence to safety and compliance standards. A key focus of this position is direct patient interaction, requiring strong customer service skills when assisting patients in person, over the phone, at the point of sale, and through the Meds‑to‑Beds program.
The technician ensures that products and services are delivered in a timely, safe, and cost‑effective manner in accordance with department policies, procedures, and industry standards.
- Assist the pharmacist with medication processing and dispensing following the retail pharmacy workflow.
- Assist with inventory management as instructed by the pharmacist.
- Aid with insurance billing and financial assistance.
- Support the pharmacist with the Meds‑to‑Beds program.
- Demonstrate strong problem‑solving skills and offer reasonable solutions or options to workflow or patient care challenges.
- Participate in educational, training, and competency programs for self and other pharmacy team members.
- Answer phone calls, triage inquiries, and direct issues to the appropriate personnel in a professional manner; communicate patient needs or concerns with the pharmacist, the medical team, or the appropriate person; provide direct customer service to patients and families to promote timely access to medications.
- Assist the pharmacist with community pharmacy workflow management; prioritize daily activities while maintaining a positive, professional, and team‑oriented work environment.
- Execute point‑of‑sale transactions and reconcile opening/closing processes to maintain operational integrity.
- Under the direct supervision of the pharmacist, assist with vaccine administration per NYS regulations.
- Support the pharmacist with record keeping and compliance.
- Comply with all pharmacy regulations and policies, including URAC accreditation, FDA mandates, manufacturer restrictions (e.g., REMS, LDD) and federal/state drug laws; handle hazardous medications in compliance with safety protocols to mitigate risk.
- Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Minimum of 1+ year’s pharmacy related experience in the retail environment and maintain registration annually in conjunction with NY state law.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical functions.
- Effective communication skills.
- Basic familiarity with PCs and Windows‑based programs and the ability to learn hospital programs, pharmacy software systems and pharmacy POS systems.
- Pharmacy Technical Certification Board (PTCB).
- License:
Registered Pharmacy Technician (active & in good standing). - NY Board of Pharmacy registration for those working in NY.
- Immunization certification.
- CPR/BLS certification within 6 months of hire.
- Manual: significant manual skills / motor coordination & finger dexterity.
- Occupational: some occupational risk.
- Physical effort: medium to heavy effort; may exert up to 35 lbs. force.
- Physical environment: some exposure to dirt, odors, noise, human waste, etc.
- Rate range: $26.00‑$35.49.
