Summary/PrimaryRole
The Clinical Lab Supervisor functions as the managing technologist, under the guidance of the Lab Director, and is responsible for being part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, development and implementation of objectives for the Lab. The Clinical Lab Supervisor is responsible for coordinating all technical and logistical functions to ensure prompt and accurate testing and reporting of results for all laboratory samples within established time frames.
The Clinical Lab Supervisor functions within the scope of practice regulated by State and National government as well as various accrediting agencies.
Duties & Responsibilities

- Works as a bench technologist approximately 50% of the time, chemistry, Hematology, PCR testing.
- Supervises clinical laboratory staff. Perform all personnel functions for clinical laboratory staff including approving PTO, preparing bi-weekly time sheets, and completing annual evaluations.
- Oversees daily operations of clinical laboratory, including LIS and interfaces with EMR, and equipment maintenance agreements.
- Maintains all laboratory records and procedure manuals in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Monitors laboratory performance for compliance with accreditation, federal, and state regulatory requirements and reports deficiencies to administration.
- Writes/updates lab policies and SOPs as necessary.
- Analyzes new tests to be implemented and assists in equipment acquisition and validation studies before new process put into use in conjunction with the Laboratory Medical Director.
- Reviews lot to lot studies, linearities, and instrument correlations as needed
- Reviews calibrations and Quality control monthly
- Acquires appropriate proficiency testing material that meets NYSDOH guidelines. Reviews, results, and provides corrective action as needed.
- Responsible for pulling monthly statistics of volume of testing performed.
- Ensures competencies are performed by all staff on hire, in six months, and annually
- Ensures licensed medical technicians and technologists have documented 12 hours of continuing education annually
- Responsible for all equipment maintenance schedules/service contracts and facilitating repairs
- Performs specimen audit for each section of the laboratory and annual review of each audit performed to ensure corrections maintained
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree and current NYS Medical Technologist license required.
- Minimum of 6 years of experience as a Medical Technologist
- Previous leadership experience in a NYS certified lab recommended
- Previous experience with histology and microbiology processes preferred
- Excellent attention to detail
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Ability to work and communicate with a diverse group of individuals
This position has direct supervisory responsibility for all clinical laboratory staff, including scheduling, performance evaluations, timecards, training, and annual competency assessments. To effectively support staff and ensure operational continuity, the incumbent is expected to work on-site and be available during regular laboratory operating hours.
