Duties
Conduct equipment operator assessment, certification, and training programs on a regular schedule within a DOT region. Occasional specialized training may be required in other regions. Train operators on a wide variety of self‑propelled construction equipment and heavy dump trucks with plow and wing. Maintain training records and prepare reports for the Supervising Equipment Operator Instructor.
Conduct individual training sessions for equipment operators to prepare them for the Department of Motor Vehicles Commercial Drivers Licensure Test.
Travel Requirements:
Occasional overnight travel may be required.
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY‑HELPS).
QualificationsOpen competitive minimum qualifications:
Four years’ experience in operation and maintenance of at least three of the following self‑propelled heavy construction equipment: excavators, graders, pavement wideners, bulldozers, heavy dump trucks with a plow and wing configuration, pavers, front‑end loaders, and backhoes; and six months’ experience as a designated instructor in operation and maintenance of complex heavy construction equipment or trucks over thirteen tons. A designated instructor is someone who has provided classroom, shop, over‑the‑road, or work site training on complex equipment.
At appointment and continuously thereafter, you must have a valid New York State Class A Commercial Driver’s License without any of the following restrictions: air‑brake, automatic transmission, or a tractor‑trailer CMV restriction. A valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License without an air‑brake restriction, or its equivalent, will also be required when performance testing it. You may also be required to have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or to demonstrate your transportation ability during interview.
Note:
Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title and assignment. Employees may be tested during pre‑employment screening and may be disqualified or removed for a positive test.
Candidates must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis.
- During the NY‑HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non‑competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications.
- After the program terminates, employees hired under NY‑HELPS will have their non‑competitive employment status converted to competitive status without an examination.
- Employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
The starting salary is $59,844 ($50,844 base plus $9,000 geographic pay differential). The maximum compensation is $74,061 ($65,061 standard rate plus $9,000 geographic pay differential). Geographic adjustments may apply: a Mid‑Hudson Adjustment of $1,650 or a Downstate Adjustment of $3,400 depending on location.
