All qualified candidates will be placed on an Eligibility List for 6 months.
This is a 9.5 month position.
Candidates who possess a valid and current CA teaching credential or hold a Bachelors Degree AND a passing CBEST score will be placed at Step 6 of the salary range designated for this classification.
BASIC FUNCTIONSUnder the direction of an assigned supervisor, the Instructional Assistant I and II provide instructional support and assistance to teachers and students in special education programs. Responsibilities include behavior management, instructional assistance, clerical duties, and supporting classroom activities across a range of settings including Special Day Class, Resource Specialist Program, Adapted Physical Education, Inclusion, and other non‑critical care programs.
INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT I – SPECIAL EDUCATION- Assist teachers and students in designated special education instructional programs.
- Prepare instructional materials, learning aides, and assist in implementation of curriculum.
- Administer, monitor, and score tests; chart progress and record grades and attendance.
- Support students with learning, communication, and behavioral challenges.
- Assist with Individualized Education Plan (IEP) implementation and behavior plans.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records.
- Operate audio‑visual and educational equipment.
- Assist with physical support, including wheelchair assistance and personal care as needed.
- Participate in staff meetings, in‑service training, and parent conferences.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction in critical‑skills special education programs (Severely Handicapped, Physical Handicapped, Transition).
- Support students in self‑contained and critical skills environments.
- Prepare instructional materials and assist in curriculum implementation.
- Administer tests and chart student progress.
- Assist with IEP implementation, behavior management, and physical support.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records.
- Provide first aid and medical support as required.
- Operate audio‑visual equipment and assist with classroom technology.
- Participate in staff meetings, in‑service training, home visits, and parent conferences.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
• Passage of the PUSD examination for this classification.
• For Instructional Assistant II:
Valid certifications of First Aid, Adult/Child CPR and AED within the first six months of employment or at the time of application (American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or district‑approved provider).

- Reinforce instruction to students with disabilities.
- Assist with instruction and related activities in classroom environments.
- Perform clerical duties related to classroom activities.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Communicate effectively in writing and orally.
- Work confidentially with discretion.
