Job Summary
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high‑resolution surveillance systems. We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Mechanical Engineering CAD Designer within the Mechanical Engineering Systems Integration Group. The role involves designing metallic and composite mounting structures for avionics and payloads in remotely piloted aircraft, optimizing fit, function, thermal, manufacturing, maintainability, quality, cost and schedule considerations.
Design tasks range from detail part design to layouts, subassemblies, large assemblies and installation‑level modeling and drawing creation using 3D CAD software, with opportunities for prototype mock‑ups and validation on actual aircraft. The position may coordinate segments of a project and may have frequent inter‑organization and customer contact on technical issues.
- Apply technical knowledge to design, investigate and resolve assigned design problems using standard engineering and design standards.
- Utilize 3D CAD software for design solutions and drawings.
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of configuration management of large assemblies.
- Create documentation and present engineering changes to the change control board.
- Perform tolerance analysis and understand GDT principles.
- Conduct hands‑on investigation of problems and validate solutions.
- Create and present design review documentation to engineering management.
- Collaborate with designers and engineers across multiple disciplines.
- May direct activities of lower‑level designers.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Observe all laws, regulations, and obligations in business conduct, ensuring safe working practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Typically requires an associate’s degree or certificate indicating training in Pro Engineer/CREO, NX, CATIA or IDEAS design software, plus at least thirteen years of progressive experience with CAD software, with a minimum of five years in Pro Engineer/CREO, NX, CATIA, IDEAS or related software. Additional education may substitute for work experience.
- Complete in‑depth understanding of engineering design concepts and principles, and ability to learn new concepts quickly.
- Proven design experience using 3D CAD engineering software; CREO or NX preferred.
- Self‑starter, highly motivated, mechanical aptitude.
- Organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases and determine appropriate approaches at task or project level to provide solutions to complex problems.
- Excellent communication, documentation, presentation, computer, interpersonal and hands‑on skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to obtain and maintain DOD Security Clearance required.
- Works independently and as part of a team.
Full‑time, hourly
Salary Range$87,070 – $132,963
