Water Utilities Worker I/II
The City of Poway is looking for a motivated, reliable, and team‑focused individual to join our Water Utilities division as Water Utilities Worker I or II. In this role you will help maintain, repair, and enhance the City’s water distribution systems and facilities to ensure safe, dependable service for our community.
Water Utilities Worker I: $30.89 – $37.55 per hour
Water Utilities Worker II: $35.19 – $42.78 per hour
The City is in the final year of a six‑year agreement and future negotiated increases for this position include a 5% wage increase effective 7/1/2026.
Responsibilities- Perform construction, maintenance, and repair activities of City water utilities systems and facilities, including complex residential and commercial water meters, valve cans, meter boxes, and water distribution valves.
- Maintain water meters, installing new meters, testing and repairing meters of various sizes, repairing leaks, and replacing meters as necessary; install service lines for newly developed properties and account for the installation of meters for new homes; perform shut‑downs of services as required.
- Maintain water valves, locate and raise unexposed valves, operate automated machines to exercise valves on an annual basis, and update records following new valve installation.
- Flush water distribution lines to ensure water quality, utilize chlorine level testing devices, and run tests for dissolved solids, bacteria, and coliforms.
- Operate and maintain specialized vehicles and a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of water utilities systems and facilities.
- Operate hand and power tools and equipment related to work assignments as instructed.
- Observe safe work methods and appropriately use required safety equipment.
- Repair concrete after water distribution system maintenance, including sidewalk panels and temporary street patches.
- Use valve‑turning equipment to isolate and shut down pre‑designated water lines for routine maintenance and in emergency situations; ensure proper shut‑down of services by using sounding equipment and flow rates; provide explanations to the public during shut‑downs.
- Participate in the City‑wide inspection program, inspecting assigned infrastructure for safety issues, structural integrity, and potential future work projects, and marking areas that need repair.
- Monitor contractors working with and around underground services to ensure work is performed to code; address discrepancies as necessary.
- Maintain public facilities, shop and garage areas, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, securing equipment at the close of the workday.
- Install street barricades and cones and control traffic around work sites and special events to ensure safe conditions for the public and City workers.
- Provide information and demonstrations to new employees regarding certain work tasks.
- Maintain accurate logs and records of work performed and materials and equipment used.
- Maintain attendance and punctuality and observe scheduled hours on a regular basis.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- One year of experience in construction, maintenance, and/or repair of water utilities and/or related facilities, systems, and appurtenances, or an equivalent combination of experience, knowledge, and water technology education.
- Completion of 12th grade or equivalent.
- Possession or ability to obtain a Class A driver’s license with a tanker endorsement.
- Possession or ability to obtain a Class C driver’s license with the ability to obtain a Class A license within the first year.
- Possession or ability to obtain a D1 Water Distribution Operator Certificate within the first year of employment, issued by the State Water Resources Control Board.
