The Senior Accountant is responsible for supporting the accurate and timely financial operations of a multi-property real estate portfolio. This role plays a critical hands-on position in monthly close, property-level financial reporting, CAM reconciliations, and day-to-day accounting functions.

The ideal candidate is a detail-driven accounting professional who thrives in structured environments, values accuracy, and understands how real estate financials connect to operations. This role requires strong analytical skills, prior experience in real estate accounting, and the ability to independently manage assigned properties while partnering closely with the Controller, Property Management, and Operations teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and post journal entries; maintain accuracy of the general ledger.
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes in accordance with established timelines.
  • Prepare property-level financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Assist with variance analysis and provide explanations for material fluctuations.
  • Ensure financials meet internal accuracy standards - pennies matter.
  • Maintain accounting records for assigned commercial and/or multi-family properties.
  • Support mortgage, escrow, and lender reporting requirements as assigned.
  • Assist with annual budgets, reforecasts, and operating expense tracking.
  • Ensure compliance with lease terms and accounting policies.
  • Prepare CAM reconciliations and annual true-ups for assigned properties.
  • Ensure accurate tenant billings and recoveries in accordance with lease agreements.
  • Research and resolve tenant inquiries related to CAM and operating expenses.
  • Partner with Property Management to resolve discrepancies efficiently.
Banking, Cash & Reconciliations
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations for operating and escrow accounts.
  • Investigate and resolve reconciling items timely.
  • Assist with cash flow tracking and reporting.
  • Ensure reconciliations are completed within KPI timelines.
  • Review invoices for accuracy, proper coding, and approval prior to posting.
  • Assist with vendor reconciliations and issue resolution.
  • Support 1099 preparation and year-end reporting.
  • Maintain organized documentation to support audits and internal controls.
Policies, Controls & Process Improvement
  • Follow documented accounting policies and procedures.
  • Identify process gaps or inefficiencies and recommend improvements.
  • Support audit readiness and internal control compliance.
  • Partner with the Controller and accounting team to meet departmental KPIs.
  • Provide cross-functional support to Property Management and Operations.
  • Willingness to assist with day-to-day tasks during peak close or project periods.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, accountable, and high-performance culture.
  • Analyze financial data and trends to support strategic decision making.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and provide necessary documentation.
  • Support internal controls and recommend process improvements.
  • Mentor junior accounting staff and provide guidance on best practices.

Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 3–6 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in real estate.
  • Hands-on experience with general ledger accounting and month-end close.
  • Exposure to CAM reconciliations and tenant accounting.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
  • Clear communication skills with the ability to explain calculations and findings.
Preferred
  • Experience in commercial and/or multi-family real estate accounting.
  • Familiarity with property management systems (e.g., Yardi).
  • Experience supporting audits and financial reviews.
  • Prior experience managing a portfolio of properties independently.
  • Accuracy & Detail Orientation – High standards for financial precision.
