The Seasonal Schools and Community Educator works alongside our Educator team to deliver engaging educational programs, field trip stations, and community events for schools, families, and diverse community audiences. This position fosters meaningful learning experiences through inclusive, participant-centered programming while promoting a welcoming, safe, and positive environment for all participants.

Responsibilities
  • Delivers educational information to, and facilitates interactive activities with, Zoo visitors (mainly children and families) on topics related to local wildlife and conservation.
  • Creates a positive guest experience by providing educational information, and answering question.
  • Ability to build meaningful relationships and present culturally responsive programming for individuals and families from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Representing the Zoo at weekend community and school events.
  • May lead and participate in on-grounds programs such as Little Explorers Base Camp, Field Trip Stations, and off-sit community event, in conjunction with the School Educator team.
  • May be asked to provide feedback and develop materials related to the programs mentioned above.
  • Maintains friendly and positive attitude towards guests and coworkers.
  • Becomes knowledgeable about Zoo animals and related conservation initiatives, as well as animal habitats.
  • May operate motorized vehicle.
  • Assist with projects in other areas of the Education Department (e.g. subbing in Zoo Kids)
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Pursuing BA/BS or previous work-related experience in education, communication, or natural sciences preferred.
  • Understanding of the concepts of environmental education, interpretation, natural resources and conservation.
  • Able to communicate well verbally to groups of all sizes and ages.
  • Able to balance multiple assignments in a time efficient manner successfully.
  • Able to maintain courteous and helpful behavior and work without direct supervision.
  • Able to work in varied weather conditions (i.e. extreme heat, rain).
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Able to maintain appropriate employee appearance (see uniform guidelines in the employee handbook).
  • Able to work as a team with other staff members.
  • Subject to Drug Free Workplace Policy.
  • Subject to BMV check.
  • Subject to Criminal Background check including fingerprinting.
Hours

Tuesday - Saturday (working approximately 20 hrs. per week - must be flexible).
