Park County residents lack year‑round access to nutritious food despite having some of the most fertile lands in the state. Agricultural lands are being rapidly sold to developers; products are exported; and infrastructure, policies, and systems are inadequate to protect its local food system. Food insecurity disproportionately impacts low‑income residents who cannot afford rising food costs. The Food Security Educator VISTA will build PEP’s capacity to combat food insecurity, by designing education experiences staff can execute, fostering the indispensability of ag to youth and low‑income who are impacted most.
Educating adults and youth will protect the industry and foster workforce opportunities to sustain the local food system. The VISTA will learn the local foods system; build resources and systems to execute existing education; research strategies; and develop a funding plan to ensure sustainability. This position builds PEP staff’s tools to educate not just those participating food production, but rather to educate consumers and grow community‑wide support.
The member will not provide direct services or ongoing program delivery, but will instead develop sustainable systems, tools, and processes that enable PEP staff and community partners to expand food security initiatives beyond the VISTA term. This VISTA is one of six positions in PEP's Intermediary VISTA Program in Park County, WY.
