POSITION SUMMARY

Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) is Monday – Friday and focuses on gathering necessary data for surgical patients. The PAT Registered Nurse (RN) performs assessments and evaluations both via phone and in person depending on the needs of the patient. The PAT RN obtains an intensive medical history, medication list, necessary orders and H&Ps. The RN also perform tasks including but not limited to obtaining medical reports from specialty areas such as cardiology and pulmonology, drawing labs, getting an EKG, arranging for a chest x‑ray and anesthesia consults.

The PAT RN monitors for abnormal lab and test results and works collaboratively with physicians to ensure that patients are ready to safely proceed with the scheduled surgery. Pre‑Admission Testing RNs provides patient education for both pre‑op and post‑op. The RN works with an interdisciplinary team. They teach the Joint Academy classes to patients undergoing total joint replacements. The PAT RN monitors their schedule as well as the surgery schedule for add‑ons and changes so they may adjust their workload as necessary.

The RN will utilize the nursing process in the provision of care and will practice within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Wyoming and the policies, procedures and standards of the Health System. The RN will demonstrate a commitment to teamwork through effective collaboration efforts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Initiates an accurate admission and ongoing assessments of patient population
  • Formulates a comprehensive nursing plan using established policies and protocols
  • Performs therapeutic nursing interventions for patient population according to unit policies and procedures
  • Provides patient and family education specific to the patient population
  • Initiates discharge planning according to the nursing care plan and in collaboration with interdisciplinary departments
  • Performs appropriate documentation compliant with hospital and departmental policies
  • Practices according to safety and infection control policies
  • Initiates and follows established standards in emergency situation(s)
  • Maintains annual competencies related to safety and emergency situations
  • Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patient, family and staff
  • Reports appropriately and in a positive effective manner on patient status to members of the health care team
  • Communicates with patients, family and friends in a professional manner exhibiting patience and tact, which decreases anxiety and conveys an attitude of acceptance, sensitivity and caring
  • Uses appropriate hand off communications to other team members practicing proper telephone etiquette
  • Initiates problem solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships
  • Participates in collegial interaction with other healthcare professionals
  • Attends required continuing education in compliance with State Nursing Board, hospital and departmental requirements
