Summary of Responsibilities

The Operating Room Registered Nurse provides comprehensive patient care throughout the perioperative process, ensuring the safety and comfort of patients during surgical procedures. This involves preparing the operating room, managing equipment, and collaborating with the surgical team.

Essential Work Functions
  • Prepare the operating room by ensuring all instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies are ready for each surgical procedure.
  • Assist in positioning and preparing patients for surgery, addressing concerns and ensuring comfort and safety.
  • Maintain a sterile field throughout procedures and adhere to infection control protocols.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team, providing instruments, supplies, and support promptly.
  • Monitor the patient’s condition during surgery, document changes, and notify the surgeon.
  • Handle surgical instruments and supplies, ensuring proper use, sterilization, and disposal.
  • Manage specimen collection, labeling, and transport according to protocol.
  • Document all aspects of patient care accurately and thoroughly.
  • Participate in patient handoff communication during pre‑ and post‑operative phases.
  • Assist in cleaning and restocking the operating room between cases, following infection control and turnover protocols.
  • Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure compliance with facility policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Follow hospital safety rules and procedures, including proper use of PPE and infection prevention measures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of practice.
Required Qualifications
  • One year of recent experience as an Operating Room RN.
  • Valid RN license in compliance with state regulations.
  • Current BLS certification (AHA/ARC).
Preferred Qualifications
  • ACLS (AHA/ARC) or PALS (AHA/ARC) or ENPC certification.
  • OR Nursing Certification (CNOR).
  • Other certifications and licenses may be required for this position.
Required Essential Skills
  • Critical thinking, service excellence, and good interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • Ability to read/comprehend written instructions and follow verbal instructions; proficiency in PC skills.
  • Physical Abilities: Must be able to remain stationary, move equipment, push, pull, and bend; lift 50–100 lbs.
