Position
Shaver's Creek Visitor Services Program Coordinator – Front‑line staff for the visitor center, Weidemann Bookstore, Gift Shop, and Litzinger Herpetarium. The role serves as a primary liaison to the community of visitors and members, enhancing the educational mission of Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center.
Responsibilities- Coordinate and develop the Weidemann Bookstore and Lobby, serving approximately 20,000 yearly drop‑in visitors.
- Maintain a welcoming space for visitors, answering questions and offering educational information about the natural world and resident animals.
- Develop the yearly bookstore budget, manage sales and inventory, update the online store, place orders, maintain vendor relationships, and perform weekly reconciliations.
- Train interns and staff on bookstore processes, coordinate local art consignment, and provide ongoing support.
- Collaborate with the Program Registration Coordinator to manage membership programs and support seasonal registration spikes (e.g., Summer Camp).
- Assist with intern hiring, internal communications, and program marketing through website updates, community calendars, and email lists.
- Work a Thursday‑through‑Monday schedule to support weekend visitation and programming.
Minimum Education/Experience
- General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or High School diploma + 2+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Past retail experience with phone and in‑person customer interactions.
- Comfortable answer phone calls and interacting with diverse visitors.
- Experience with natural history interpretation is a plus.
- Proficiency with database management, email, and word processing.
- Strong environmental ethic aligned with the mission of Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center.
This position requires a PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check, National Sex Offender Registry Clearance (NSOR), and any additional clearances if residency outside Pennsylvania occurred in the past five years.
Salary & BenefitsSalary range: $38,300.00 – $55,500.00. Penn State provides a competitive benefits package with medical, dental, vision coverage, robust retirement plans, paid time off, and a generous 75% tuition discount available to employees, spouses, and children.
