Deputy Director: Emerging Research

Purpose of the Role

To lead and manage cross-cutting research, development and innovation initiatives that strengthen and advance South Africa's science and technology landscape.

• Oversee implementation and monitoring of national initiatives in nanotechnology and photonics.
• Guide development and approval of annual business plans and multi-year funding agreements.
• Monitor programme performance, analyse reports and provide strategic recommendations.
• Facilitate funding transfers and ensure compliance with approved plans.
• Lead responsible development initiatives, including public engagement, health, safety and environmental research platforms, standards development, and industry forums.
• Establish and manage international collaborations and country-specific programmes of action.
• Coordinate and host the biennial Nano School.
• Represent the organisation on steering committees and advisory boards.

• National Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Science (Honours advantageous).
• Minimum 3 years' experience in a science research or innovation environment.
• Experience in programme/project management and monitoring & evaluation.

• Strong stakeholder management and negotiation skills.
• Strategic thinking and analytical ability.
• Excellent report writing and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and under pressure.
