Overview

USU Eastern Upward Bound is a federally funded grant program designed to encourage postsecondary preparation of high school students who are from low‑income families and are first‑generation college bound students. We serve 60 high school students from Grand, Emery and Carbon counties during the school year and 30 high school students in a six‑week summer program. During the summer, approximately 30 Upward Bound students experience intensive academic, cultural, and social expansion while living in the residence halls at USU Eastern.

The students will attend class beginning May 26, 2026 and continue through June 24, 2026. Classes are held from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a lunch break and a study hall. Each teacher will teach up to 30 students in grades 9‑12 for one hour a day, four days a week (Monday‑Thursday).

Teaching Qualifications

We are looking for teachers who are qualified to teach:

  • MATH
  • LANGUAGE ARTS
  • SCIENCE
  • FOREIGN LANGUAGE
  • PHYSICAL EDUCATION
  • OTHER EXTRA CURRICULAR (e.g., theatre, art, graphic arts, culinary arts, etc.)

Please indicate in your cover letter which courses you are qualified and comfortable teaching.

Responsibilities
  • Create hands‑on curriculum for up to 30 students in grades 9‑12, with class instruction four days a week from May 26, 2026 to June 24, 2026.
  • Grading responsibilities after regular teaching hours.
  • Engage students in the learning process and inspire enthusiasm for your course.
  • Help prepare students for college and steer them toward collegiate opportunities.
  • Mentor high school students and encourage a love of learning.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Upward Bound Summer 2026 Teacher works indoors in a provided classroom for one hour per day, Monday through Thursday, over a five‑week period. The work environment is climate‑controlled with typical classroom noise and regular interaction with high‑school students (8th‑12th grades) and Upward Bound staff. Physical demands are light and include standing, walking during instruction, sitting for planning, and light lifting of materials.

Mental demands include planning and delivering engaging lessons, maintaining classroom management, and monitoring student safety and behavior.
