Overview

The EMT Skills Instructor supports delivery of the psychomotor (hands-on) portion of the Utah EMT certification course. In close collaboration with the Course Coordinator and Medical Director, this role instructs, demonstrates, supervises, and evaluates EMT students during lab sessions and practical exams to ensure they achieve competency across the National EMS Education Standards (NES) psychomotor domain and demonstrate appropriate professional (affective) behaviors required for recommendation to NREMT testing and Utah EMT licensure.

Responsibilities

Instruction, Supervision, and Assessment
  • Provide in person psychomotor instruction, demonstration, guided practice, and skills verification for EMT lab sessions; all psychomotor skills must be taught and verified in person under a Bureau endorsed instructor.
  • Maintain required instructor to student ratio (1:6) during hands‑on practice and pass offs; assist the Course Coordinator in managing adequate instructor coverage before each class.
  • Teach and evaluate student performance using state approved skill measurement instruments and NES‑aligned competencies; document pass/fail outcomes and remediation needs.
  • Conduct and document remediation for students who need additional practice to demonstrate competency before advancing.
  • Contribute to the required affective (professional behavior) assessments by observing and recording professional conduct, communication, teamwork, and ethics during labs (minimum of three affective assessments per student are required across the course).
Safety, Compliance, and Records
  • Enforce a safe lab environment and proper PPE/BSI practices; ensure equipment is clean, functional, and available in sufficient quantities for the cohort size.
  • Support compliance with ADA and Harassment/Sexual Harassment policies in all instructional interactions and learning settings.
  • Complete timely and accurate documentation of skills attempts, pass‑offs, remediation, attendance, and affective observations; submit records to the Course Coordinator for centralized retention in accordance with BEMS requirements.
  • Participate in quality improvement (QI) activities (e.g., post‑course reviews, skill success rate tracking, instructor and course evaluations) to enhance outcomes and ensure program alignment with state standards.
Collaboration and Professional Standards
  • Coordinate with the Course Coordinator to align lab content and sequencing with the course syllabus/schedule, hybrid delivery plan (if applicable), and NES modules.
  • Provide input to the Course Coordinator and Medical Director regarding students’ readiness in the psychomotor and affective domains; recognize that only the Course Coordinator has authority to recommend students for NREMT testing and licensure.
  • Uphold BEMS expectations for honesty and accuracy in documentation and for maintaining the integrity of testing and instructional processes.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Utah EMS license at EMT level or higher in good standing with Utah BEMS.
  • Current Utah EMS Instructor Endorsement
  • At least two (2) years of 911 EMS field experience as a licensed EMT, AMET or EMT‑P.

Preferred

  • Prior experience teaching EMT skills or conducting psychomotor examinations.
  • Familiarity with course delivery formats (broadcast lectures + in‑person skills), including instructor presence and documentation expectations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated mastery of EMT‑level psychomotor skills (e.g., airway/ventilation, oxygen therapy, bleeding control, splinting, patient assessment).
  • Excellent interpersonal, coaching, and technical feedback skills; commitment to upholding Professional Conduct & Code of Ethics for EMS providers.
