Role Summary
The Advanced Software Engineer will join Avalanche, a Warner Bros. Games studio in Salt Lake City, to architect and implement backend infrastructure for a new online multiplayer RPG. The role involves close collaboration with engineering, art, design, and central technology teams to develop secure, scalable, and highly available systems.
Responsibilities- Architect, develop, and implement key backend game systems, features, and services.
- Design, implement, and maintain scalable and secure backend services and infrastructure with WB Central Technology.
- Collaborate with project engineering to produce high‑quality, low‑latency code.
- Integrate internal and external shared services and libraries.
- Conduct peer code reviews and champion code quality standards.
- Work with design and gameplay teams to build supporting backend systems and tools.
- Mentor junior engineers and guide them on new features.
- Participate in all development stages from concept to live‑ops.
- 8+ years of professional software engineering, cross‑functional teams.
- Experience on a successful large‑scale multiplayer online game or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience.
- Experience managing a high‑functioning team of engineers.
- Strong fundamentals in OOP, algorithms, and data structures.
- Deep understanding of server architecture, cloud computing (AWS, Gamelift, Lambda), backend services, and microservices.
- Knowledge of networking protocols and multiplayer systems (matchmaking, persistence, replication).
- Proficient in Unreal Engine network/multiplayer features (Online Subsystems, EOS, Rep Graph, subobject replication, RPCs).
- Strong problem‑solving, debugging, and troubleshooting skills.
- Passion for online multiplayer RPGs and deep experience with online games.
- Knowledge of industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in online gaming.
- Experience with Dev Ops, CI/CD pipelines, and live‑game deployment strategies.
- Familiarity with anti‑cheat solutions and game security best practices.
- Understanding of performance analysis and optimizations.
- Knowledge of Unreal’s latest replication system, Iris.
