Position: Library Clerk -  20 Hours

TITLE: SCHOOL LIBRARY CLERK - 20 Hours

DEPARTMENT: All Schools

REPORTS TO: Principal

Wage: $25.71 - $26.98 hourly wage effective July 1, 2024

SUMMARY

Under the regular direction of the teacher-librarian the School Library Clerk performs clerical, record keeping and data entry duties for the school library. She/he works cooperatively with other staff, students, parents and the public.

DUTIES
  • Inputs information from a variety of source documents utilizing various computer programs.
  • Composes and types a variety of materials such as correspondence, memoranda, reports and book pockets spine labels.
  • Assists with or processes materials for school libraries.
  • Sorts, distributes, files, shelves and repairs library resource materials; processes book discards and books for rebinding.
  • Charges and discharges library materials using an automated system and distributes overdue notices or bills.
  • Assists students and/or teachers in locating and selecting library resource materials and in use of library-based computers and the Internet.
  • Provides the necessary supervision for a safe environment for students in the library.
  • Maintains records of library expenditures and circulation records for accuracy.
  • Prepares, processes and maintains a variety of lists, records and files such as list of periodicals, titles sent to the DRC or ordering and/or cataloguing.
  • Receives and ensures accuracy and condition of incoming goods and files discrepancy reports.
  • Maintains schedules for all shared resources.
  • Answers telephones, takes and relays messages and sorts library mail.
  • Prepares library orders.
  • Assists with organization of book fairs as requested.
  • Packs and unpacks resource materials.
  • Orders and receives learning resources, library materials and supplies, ensures accuracy in shipping.
  • Duplicates, sorts, collates and staples materials.
  • Maintains general upkeep of library.
  • Annually prepares an inventory of library materials and supplies as requested.
  • Assists with the continuous inventory of the library collection during the school year.
  • Performs other clerical or emergent duties.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, SKILLS (School Library Clerk)
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Training in basic library procedures (i.e. Dewey Decimal Classification, online circulation functions, online catalogue searching) and a minimum of six months related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Keyboarding skills of 45 words per minute or proof of competency in keyboarding skills.
  • Basic level Word and Excel training.
  • Basic knowledge of database and computer technology.
  • Basic knowledge of office and library practices and procedures
  • Experience with Quicken would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of Business English, punctuation, spelling and Business Math.
  • Ability to use courtesy and tact in the explanation of and discussion of information in contacts with public, parents, staff and students.
  • Ability to perform individually and as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan and schedule work and organize the workload effectively.
  • Ability to work with constant interruptions.
  • Ability to maintain close attention to detail for periods of sustained duration and to meet deadlines.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Computer, photocopier, telephone, facsimile machine, paper shredder, answering machine, calculator and other office, audio visual and library related equipment.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

Sufficient vision to operate computer.

Fundamental ability to operate office and audio visual equipment. Manual dexterity.

Ability to lift and move materials up to 10 kg.
