Overview

The Sr. Exploration Geologist position is a key role within a tight-knit team tasked with the exploration of the historical Keno Hill Silver District. Reporting directly to the Exploration Manager, you will oversee all aspects of site exploration, including staff, contractor, and consultant management; effective progress tracking and communication; and the training and mentorship of junior staff to ensure the safe completion of Hecla’s objectives.

The Keno Hill mine is located in the Keno Hill Silver District in Canada’s Yukon Territory. It is one of the highest-grade silver districts in the world, situated 350 kilometres north of Whitehorse, and lies within the traditional territory of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun. The district covers 242 square kilometres (km²) with numerous mineral deposits and more than 35 historical past-producing mine sites, with an expected production of 2.7‑3.1 million ounces of silver in 2025 as the mine ramps up production.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure exploration team members work safely and comply with all safety requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with management and stakeholders; maintain formal quarterly progress reporting and attend weekly update meetings.
  • Work with the Exploration Manager and Senior Geologists to schedule and allocate departmental workload, ensuring efficient workflows and timely completion of exploration goals.
  • Assist with contractor management to maximize drilling efficiency, recovery, and compliance with Hecla’s site safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and training to personnel and foster a high-performance exploration team.
  • Review existing geological data and interpretations; develop a comprehensive knowledge of the property geology and exploration history.
  • Assist in target generation and property-wide prospect evaluation and ranking.
  • Work with a wide array of consultants to advance geological research studies and initiatives.
  • Coordinate the collection, compilation, management, and interpretation of geological information from field geology programs including mapping, prospecting, geophysics, and drilling.
  • Collaborate with the wider Yukon exploration team and resource geology team for mineral potential assessment, resource generation, and expansion, including QA/QC implementation and reporting.
  • Assist with annual budgeting tasks, track expenditure and progress to ensure programs are completed on time and within budget.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in geology; a post‑graduate degree is desirable.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in exploration drilling programs.
  • Experience supervising geological field and drilling campaigns and managing staff and contractors.
  • Proficiency with 3D software (preferably Leapfrog or Mineplan), GIS, and Microsoft Office.
  • Experience developing geological models with targeting and exploration focus.
  • Excellent understanding of geological settings, ore‑forming processes, geochemistry, and structural geology.
  • Ability to think about geologic processes across time and scale.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience developing budgets, tracking and reporting expenditures.
  • Self‑motivated, organized, and possessing leadership abilities.
  • Commitment to safety, environment, and community.
Pre‑Employment Requirements
  • Pre‑Employment Testing (drug & alcohol, blood lead, audiogram).
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Clean Driver’s Abstract.
