Job DescriptionDistrict Licensed School Nurse (LSN) – contracting 8 hours per day, 200 days;
Monday‑Friday during the school term with additional summer trainings and duties as assigned.
Salary: $53,528 (based on education level, FTE 1.09, and experience).
Must hold a Registered Nurse or Public Health Nurse license and be pursuing a Licensed School Nurse license from PELSB.
Required certifications: valid Minnesota driver’s license, Registered Nurse on the Board of Nursing, Licensed School Nurse by the MN Department of Education, Public Health Certificate, CPR/AED certification.

Job Summary: Under the direction of the Director of Student Services, the Licensed School Nurse is responsible for planning, coordinating, evaluating, and implementing the district’s health care program and services. The role involves facilitating and promoting health and safety; intervening with actual and potential health problems; performing health assessments and interventions; developing individual health care plans; administering medication; performing prescribed treatment;
providing case management services; and collaborating with other professionals to address student health needs.
- Organizes and provides leadership in health care services provided to the school district (40%).
- Supervises and coordinates the activities of health paraprofessionals in each district building.
- Plans, recommends, and implements health care procedures and health policies.
- Consults with the Director of Student Services for nursing assessments and judgments to ensure staff and health services are safe and efficient.
- Oversees the administration of first aid, sending ill children home or to physicians, administering medications, and oversight of AED and Hep B programs. Provides specific procedures and training to first aid providers and health paraprofessionals.
- Provides skilled nursing care, treatments, triage, interventions, health assessments, referrals, and follow-up as needed. Continues nursing assistance and management of health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, and seizure management.
- Formulates and implements individual health care plans for students with health care needs. Communicates and trains appropriate personnel in student health needs and care. Attends IEP, 504, SST, and SAT meetings to evaluate the plan of care. Meets with parents one‑on‑one to plan and work with parents to keep the student safe and healthy. Serves as a liaison between the school and other agencies (10%).
- Trains and educates health staff, teachers, administration, paraprofessionals, kitchen workers, bus drivers, and parents in disease, syndromes, illnesses, injuries, medications, treatments, and other medical information. Contributes to health instruction and health curriculum development (10%).
- Oversees medication administration and development of medication protocols. Implements medication management through collaboration with parents and physicians to obtain proper authorization and document health records. Oversees proper storage and administration of medications by designated personnel (10%).
- Obtains, reviews, records, and coordinates the maintenance of all student health records, files, forms, and authorizations (10%).
- Plays a role in health screenings including hearing, vision, and scoliosis screenings; conducts episodic screenings, evaluations, and follow‑ups. Sends referrals, informs teachers, and follows up with compliance and documents results (15%).
- Reports illnesses to the Department of Health as mandated. Reports suspected abuse or neglect to County Social Services or law enforcement. Makes referrals to parents for services such as mental health, public health, or community health providers (5%).
- Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required.
- Provides professional expertise and assistance to district staff and the community concerning instructional or knowledge areas.
- Keeps updated on changing developments, trends, and technologies within the field.
- Participates in staff development and professional development activities.
- Leads the district wellness committee and organizes an annual health fair.
