Electrical Engineer

Job Summary

The Electrical Specialist is responsible for providing subject matter expertise in the support of maintenance, repair, and operation of NRG’s generation fleet. This role requires a deep understanding of electrical theory, power plant design and maintenance, and the ability to work with complex testing equipment in and around medium and high voltage. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in power plant electrical maintenance and a strong commitment to safety and quality.

This role will provide support to multiple types of power generation ranging from traditional base load fossil fuel, simple and combined cycle peaking, wind, solar, and utility‑scale battery systems.

• Ability to perform, or provide technical leadership during the performance of, testing and maintenance of protective electrical systems in electrical substations and power plants.
• Provide leadership in the development and implementation of test plans and procedures.
• Collaborate with corporate engineering, plant personnel, regional utility engineers, and contracted engineering firms in the design, implementation, and commissioning of complex electrical projects.
• Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.
• Provide technical support and training to junior technicians.
• Ability to read, interpret, create, and revise power plant drawings, schematics and diagrams.
• Provide technical guidance, support and insight in multi‑year outage forecasting, maintenance and upgrade prioritization, and budgetary development.
• Willingness to provide around the clock emergency support, as needed, including video and teleconferencing, and emergency travel throughout the US.
• Strong understanding of electrical theory including experience with generators, switch gear, excitation equipment, protective relays, breakers and transformers.
• Knowledge and experience safely working with energized equipment up to 13.8kV.
• Excellent problem‑solving and analytical skills.

• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Hybrid work environment with office opportunities in Houston, Pittsburgh, or Princeton along with NRG plant locations in the Midwest, East, and Texas.
• Open office environment when in office; ability to work in field or in plants.
• Occasional work in harsh, dirty, and loud environments, at times in extreme weather, for extended hours.
• Wearing of appropriate PPE, fall protection, and arc flash clothing where required.
• Approximately 30% travel to generation facilities, support facilities, and vendor sites.
• Undergraduate degree in Engineering, or related degree field.
• Five (5) years of relevant experience in power generation or related industry.

• 10 years experience in power generation performing advanced electrical and relay protection work.

• Demonstrated project management, leadership, influence, and communication skills.
• Thorough understanding and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Confidence speaking in front of a group, including development and delivery of technical presentations.
• Desire to work in a diverse and fast‑paced environment.

• Ability to work in office, plant, and field environments.
• Ability to use keyboard and computer for extended periods.
• Ability to walk around plant sites and spend time outdoors standing, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs, and walking.

The base salary range for this position is: $98,. The base salary range above represents the low and high end of the salary range for this position. Actual salaries will vary based on several factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of the total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include annual bonus, short‑ and long‑term incentives, and program‑specific awards.
