Join our research group,
Autonomous Control and Operations
, located in Princeton, NJ, for a 6 – 12 month internship, and investigate new energy market models and optimization functions for smart grids. Our close contact with different business units in Siemens provides the opportunity to contribute to and gain experience in real industrial applications. During this internship, you will experience the excitement and challenges of industrial research. An internship with Siemens Technology is a great opportunity for students to gain real-world experience in a diverse work environment.

In this role, you will work on-site in Princeton, NJ. Our Princeton facility is recognized for providing a stimulating environment for highly talented and self-motivated students. You will have the opportunity to test your knowledge in a challenging problem-solving environment. You will be encouraged to think out of the box, innovate and find solutions to real-life problems. Key

responsibilities
  • Contribute to industrial software R&D projects in modeling and optimization for energy markets and smart grids
  • Implement concepts and develop product-level software in Python
  • Design and implement interfaces to time-series forecasting tools and services
  • Analyze system and software architecture, understand component interactions, and implement interfaces to the algorithmic core
  • Integrate and deploy software components on a cloud platform
  • Collaborate and exchange ideas with experts in the fields of power systems, optimization and software architecture across Siemens research and business units
Basic Qualifications
  • M.Sc. or PhD student pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field
  • Programming proficiency in Python – including experience writing clean, modular, reusable code, and working with scientific computing libraries such as Num Py, Sci Py, and pandas
  • Hands-on experience with software development best practices: version control (Git), unit testing (pytest), and technical documentation
  • Hands-on experience in product-level software development – including CI/CD, build, test, and deployment automation
  • Foundational knowledge of electricity markets and power systems – including market structure (e.g., day-ahead/intraday), grid operations (e.g., balancing, reserves), and key power system components (e.g., generation, load, transmission, distribution)
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal
Preferred Qualifications
  • Practical experience in research on statistical modeling, mathematical optimization and/or time-series forecasting
  • Experience with energy trading and ancillary services
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Familiarity with runtime systems and performance considerations
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in a growing, dynamic, interdisciplinary team of experts

May consider sponsorship of J-1 visa students (6-12 months), dependent upon program requirements.
