Electrical Drafter

This role focuses on creating, updating, and coordinating detailed electrical construction drawings for commercial projects while ensuring full compliance with applicable codes and project specifications. The electrical drafter supports engineers and project teams by producing accurate plans, as-built documentation, and shop drawings, and by maintaining organized CAD standards and documentation. The position offers exposure to unique and historic projects, opportunities to visit job sites, and a collaborative, easy-going work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Create and update electrical construction drawings, including single-line diagrams, riser diagrams, panel schedules, and cable and conduit layouts for commercial projects.
  • Produce accurate as-built drawings from field sketches and marked-up plans, ensuring all changes are clearly documented.
  • Coordinate electrical drawings with mechanical, architectural, structural, plumbing, and fire protection disciplines to ensure fully integrated design documents.
  • Prepare shop drawings and fabrication details as required to support construction and installation activities.
  • Ensure all drawings comply with the National Electrical Code (NEC), project specifications, and internal drafting standards.
  • Maintain CAD libraries, templates, and drawing standards to support consistency and efficiency across projects.
  • Revise drawings based on feedback from engineers, project managers, and field staff, and maintain document control to track versions and updates.
  • Assist with bills of materials (BOMs), material lists, and related documentation to support procurement and construction planning.
  • Use Excel to support panel scheduling, calculations, panel sizing, and other electrical design documentation.
  • Communicate proactively with internal teams, such as HVAC and other disciplines, to obtain required information (for example, motor sizes or equipment data) without waiting for direction.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, and field personnel to clarify design intent, resolve issues, and support project delivery.
  • Read and interpret electrical plans, single-line diagrams, blueprints, and architectural drawings to produce accurate and coordinated drafting outputs.
  • Support a fast-paced, group-oriented environment by managing multiple tasks and deadlines while maintaining high drafting accuracy and quality.
  • Contribute to complex problem solving by identifying drafting or coordination issues and proposing practical solutions.

Essential Skills

  • 4 to 5 years of electrical drafting and designing experience in commercial projects.
  • Strong proficiency with AutoCAD, specifically for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (M/E/P) construction or systems manufacturing.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD features such as Xrefs and CAD standards.
  • Proficiency with Excel for panel scheduling, electrical calculations, panel sizing, and related documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and update electrical construction drawings, including single-line diagrams, riser diagrams, panel schedules, and conduit and cable layouts.
  • Familiarity with electrical symbols, NEC requirements, panel schedules, and conduit and cable practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical plans, single-line diagrams, blueprints, and architectural drawings.
  • Strong drafting accuracy and layout skills with attention to detail and consistency.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with engineers, project managers, and field staff.
  • Ability to multi-task and perform effectively in a fast-paced, group-oriented environment.
  • Complex problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and resolve design and coordination issues.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate's degree (A.S.) in a computer design field, technical school training, or equivalent experience in AutoCAD, design, or related field experience is preferred.
  • 4 to 10 years of overall experience in drafting, design, or construction is preferred, including knowledge of the construction field.
  • Experience reading and working with architectural drawings and coordinated construction documents.
  • Experience producing as-built drawings, shop drawings, and fabrication details.
  • Experience with NEC-compliant design and documentation.
  • Exposure to commercial projects, including historic or unique buildings, is a plus.
  • Willingness to visit job sites and gain field experience to better understand installation conditions and constraints.
  • Motivation to pursue professional licensing, with license exam reimbursement available upon passing.

Work Environment

The work environment is collaborative, easy-going, and team-focused, with a strong emphasis on open communication and proactive information sharing among engineers, drafters, and field staff.
