We are seeking a skilled Data Scientist with deep expertise in developing and applying machine learning models, including LLMs and agents, as well as user-facing apps for small molecule design and pipeline prioritization. The successful candidate will join the Ingredient Modeling team within dsm-firmenich's R&D Data Science unit and work with data scientists, chemists, biologists, and perfumers to transform our internal molecule discovery process, closely integrating AI with chemistry, biotech and olfaction and taste.
Responsibilities- Use data science and AI to drive a fast-paced ingredient discovery pipeline that generates value for taste, texture and health segments.
- Develop and implement machine learning models to support ingredient discovery processes.
- Use Python and libraries (e.g., Num Py, Sci Py, Pandas, Matplotlib, Scikit-Learn, Tensor Flow, PyTorch, Keras) to build and optimize ML models.
- Apply neural network architectures and multi-objective optimization to solve ingredient design problems including exploration of chemical space; deploy and manage ML workflows on Azure and AWS.
- Stay abreast of ML, neural networks and cheminformatics advancements and apply them to drive innovation within the team.
- Utilize tools such as git, generative AI, agentic workflows, graph and relational data models, cloud-native computing and API endpoints in daily work.
- Collaborate with data scientists, chemists, biologists and perfumers to translate scientific requirements into scalable and user-friendly modeling tools and drive project success.
- Ph.D. in Cheminformatics, Computational Chemistry, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence or Quantitative Finance / Economics.
- 2–5 years of additional academic or industrial experience in cheminformatics and computational chemistry, ideally applied to ingredient-drug discovery or sensory biology; or other relevant areas.
- Experience with ML for trading/quantitative investing or similar backgrounds are welcome.
- Record of accomplishments demonstrating drive and entrepreneurial innovation.
- Strong proficiency in Python and data science libraries (Num Py, Sci Py, Pandas, Matplotlib, Scikit-Learn, Tensor Flow, PyTorch, Keras).
- Strong proficiency in cheminformatics toolkits such as RDKit.
- Understanding of ML algorithms, multi-objective optimization and (graph) neural networks.
- Experience with responsible AI coding practices, CI/CD, and cloud services (Azure or AWS) is a plus.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively, and strong communication skills.
The salary range is $100,000–$140,000. This position is eligible for bonuses and benefits; actual pay will be based on skills, experience, education, and location.
