Position: *REVISED*Postdoctoral Research Associate

Postdoctoral Research Associate – Property and Poverty

D-26-HIS-00003 | Research | History. The position is a year‑long joint residential Postdoctoral Research Associate at Princeton University's Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies and the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS).

Applicants will develop and execute a historical project aligned with the Davis Center's 2026–27 theme of "Property and Poverty." The research will examine the history of property and dispossession, wealth and poverty, and the practices of owning and disowning people, bodies, and ideas.

The appointment is expected to be renewed for a second year contingent on satisfactory performance and continued funding. Those hired at senior ranks may have multi‑year appointments.

Candidates must hold a doctoral degree by the start of the appointment. The researcher will have an office at IAS, eligibility for housing on the IAS campus for up to two years, a competitive salary, Princeton benefits, and an annual research fund of $5,000.

The research focus welcomes historians studying the intellectual, legal, religious, cultural, and economic histories of property and poverty, as well as social historians on poverty, poor relief, causes of poverty, and mechanisms of dispossession. All approaches are welcome, including but not limited to the history of intellectual property and copyright, the history of the commons, the lived experience of poverty, various forms of individual and collective ownership and resistance, the administrative and informational technologies that enable property development, and the religious and moral aspects of poverty and ownership.
