Job Type Full-Time

Overview

The Krienen lab in the Princeton Neuroscience Institute (krienenlab.org) is seeking a senior research specialist. Research in the lab focuses on understanding molecular underpinnings of brain cell type diversity and the genetic influences that shape the development and evolution of the mammalian brain, with focus on human and nonhuman primates. In this position, the scientist will contribute to several funded collaborative projects aimed at developing novel cell type specific viral (AAV‑based) tools in nonhuman primate models and producing single cell genomic (RNA‑seq and ATAC‑seq) datasets to understand epigenetic and transcriptomic properties of brain cell types.

Senior Research Specialist responsibilities include using and developing cutting‑edge technologies such as single cell genomics, molecular and image‑based assays, and next‑generation sequencing. The Senior Research Specialist is expected to oversee technicians as well as to carry out independent research. The ideal applicant will have a background in molecular biology, genomics, or molecular neuroscience, strong programming abilities, and a keen interest in the lab's research.

Prior expertise with single cell genomics, cell culture, or next‑generation sequencing is advantageous.

The applicant will also be responsible for working closely with the PI to manage daily lab operations, ordering/supplies, contributing to experimental workflows, and training personnel. This is a one‑year term position with the possibility of renewal based on funding and satisfactory performance.

Responsibilities
  • Develop advanced experimental workflows for profiling the molecular contents and biological states of thousands of individual cells or nuclei in brain tissue; applying or developing technologies to profile brain cell types.
  • Plan and oversee experiments; create DNA‑barcoding reagents; extract cells or nuclei from brain tissue; cell culture; sequencing.
  • Carry out independent research, analyze sequence‑based data and contribute to other projects as needed.
  • Train and oversee laboratory technicians, rotation students, undergraduates, and interns.
  • Participate in collaborative and consortia meetings, contribute to progress reports, publications, and presentations at scientific conferences.
  • Lab manager duties to maintain day‑to‑day operations of the lab:
    • Organizing and managing the animal, tissue, or cell culture resources in the lab.
    • Organizing and maintaining lab protocols and workflows; record keeping.
    • Maintaining animal and EHS & biosafety protocols and working closely with the PI to manage day‑to‑day operations of the lab.
    • Maintaining and ordering lab supplies and equipment.
Qualifications

Essential

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree and 7 plus years experience in neuroscience, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, or a related field is required.
  • Applicant must have extensive wet‑lab experience and experience in molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, cloning, sequencing).
  • Applicant must be highly organized and have exceptional note‑taking and communication skills (written and oral).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferred candidates will have research experience in one or more of the following: neuroanatomy, single‑cell sequencing, advanced molecular biology techniques, smFISH/histology/imaging, and quantitative/programming skills.
