Pay

The starting hourly pay range is $24.75–$26.75. The full pay range is $24.75–$42.05. Pay is based on factors such as labor market, education, work experience, and certifications.

About General Merchandise

GM teams focus on guest experience and operational efficiency, ensuring product availability and store presentation. Responsibilities include replenishment, pricing and signing, setting, maintaining the sales floor, back‑room organization, and fulfillment.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver guest‑experience commitments and maintain Target’s standards.
  • Train and monitor team members on guest experience and operations.
  • Observe and provide feedback, holding team members accountable.
  • Analyze metrics to improve guest experience and business results.
  • Lead daily and weekly workload execution and support sales goals.
  • Educate team on procedures affecting inventory management and profitability.
  • Assist leadership in identifying process gaps and implementing improvements.
  • Maintain accuracy, process, and efficiency across all GM areas.
  • Assign tasks to team members based on traffic and priorities.
  • Help with pick, pack and ship fulfillment (if applicable).
  • Ensure product availability, accurate pricing, and proper signage.
  • Stay informed about trends and Target communications.
  • Recruit and develop future leaders.
  • Support back‑up cashier and digital fulfillment while ensuring compliance.
  • Promote inclusivity, equity, and ethical conduct.
  • Model safety culture and secure the store.

Training

Target provides comprehensive training to develop the skills needed to be a General Merchandise Team Leader.

Basic Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Age 18 or older.
  • Previous retail experience preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to communicate on multiple devices and use handheld scanners.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Manage workload and prioritize tasks.
  • Remain focused and composed in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Welcoming and helpful attitude toward guests and teammates.
  • Effective communication skills.
Workplace Expectations
  • Access all building areas to address guest or teammate issues.
  • Interpret instructions, reports, and information.
  • Handle cash register operations accurately.
  • Climb ladders; lift and move merchandise up to 44 pounds.
  • Maintain a flexible schedule and reliable attendance.
  • Work in varying temperatures, humidity, or other conditions.
  • Remain mobile for the duration of the shift.
