JOB DESCRIPTIONThe Princeton Police Department is hiring Crossing Guards for numerous locations. Crossing guards assist children in crossing the street on their way to and from school. Crossing guards provide safe crossings of the roadways and model appropriate street skills and behavior for children.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS PERFORMED- The ability to stand in the roadway with a STOP paddle continuously raised to shoulder height to show that pedestrians are using the crosswalk and stand for significant amounts of time
- Verbally directing children across the street
- Recognizing and communicating potentially dangerous traffic situations and hazards while performing their duties
- Fulfilling job requirements outdoors in all weather, including rain, fog, snow, sleet, cold, heat, humidity, and wind
- Must successfully complete 2 hours of classroom training and 20 hours of on‑the‑job observation training
- Obey all established traffic safety regulations to ensure pedestrians are assisted in crossing roadways at designated location
- Coordinate the flow of pedestrians across the selected intersection(s) with the flow of vehicular traffic and traffic control devices (where applicable)
- Choosing good times to step into the street to create gaps in traffic
- Understand and abide by the Rules and Regulations of the Princeton Police Department
- Wear and properly utilize the proper safety equipment (i.e., safety vest, coat, etc.)
- Document and report any incidents, accidents, injuries, hazards, or suspicious persons/vehicles to the Supervisor and appropriate police or school officials
- Keen alertness to surroundings and an ability to follow directions and procedures
- Ability to walk pedestrians safely across busy intersections and react safely and decisively to traffic conditions
- Possess an excellent attitude and work ethic
- Ability to deal with the public and respond to inquiries in a tactful and courteous manner
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Physical Demand
Standing/Walking
Stands and walks on various surfaces, including asphalt, concrete, uneven pavement, dirt, grass, and uneven ground.
Lifting/Holding/Reaching
Lifts and holds STOP paddle at shoulder height; may be required to reach to push buttons to activate the “walk/don’t walk” traffic signal.
Frequently
Turning/Twisting
Turns head and body to observe traffic and children approaching a crosswalk.
Agility/Balance
Lifts both feet over the curb and steps off the curb; walks on snow, ice, uneven pavement; can react and move quickly to avoid vehicles.
Communicate verbally
Speaks clearly and firmly to instruct child pedestrians and other pedestrians during the crossing.
Tolerance for weather extremes
Performs crossings in rain, fog, snow, sleet, cold, heat, humidity, and wind.
Vision
Able to observe vehicles and pedestrians, read signs, and recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and environmental hazards such as potholes, ice, and sidewalk obstructions and meet the specified vision requirements.
Hearing
Able to recognize vehicles approaching from any direction, backup alarms, and horns; to hear children and other pedestrians speaking in a potentially noisy, distracting environment; and meet the specified hearing requirements.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS- Must have a valid New Jersey driver’s license to drive municipal vehicles.
- Must satisfy employer paid physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
- NJ residency required by N.J.S.A. 52:14‑7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70)
