Performs diagnostic sleep studies related to the evaluation and treatment of patients with sleep disorders.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE- Must possess current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided.
- WV:
Licensed Respiratory Therapist Registered (LRTR) through the West Virginia Board of Respiratory Care. - Certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) through the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists within two (2) years of hire.
- Certification in CPR.
- One (1) year of Polysomnographic experience.
- Current certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT).
- Clinical Sleep Educator Certificate from the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists.
- One (1) year of Sleep Study scoring experience.

- Performs high-quality polysomnograms.
- Utilizes proper testing montages to detect abnormal sleep architecture, EEG/EKG abnormalities, abnormal respiratory events, and low oximetry.
- Performs equipment pre- and post-testing including impedance check and calibrations and records in patient’s permanent record.
- Obtains consent for Video Taping, Filming and/or Photography and Polysomnogram.
- Completes Pre- and Post-sleep Questionnaires.
- Documents history of the patient’s sleep problems and documentation for each procedure.
- Detects sleep hygiene problems and records appropriately.
- Charts clinical notes for interpretation by physician regarding action taken and any comfort measures provided during sleep testing.
- Records an event log with chronological documentation of patient interaction during sleep testing.
- Labels, files, and stores medical data and test results according to Policy/Procedure in Sleep Center Manual.
- Ability to stoop, kneel, stand on feet for extended periods of time, lift, carry, push and pull objects and patients of various weights in order to maneuver patients.
- Ability to operate the sleep lab requiring eye‑hand coordination, finger dexterity, near, far, and night vision with extended visual concentration.
- Ability to communicate and understand instructions, information and/or concepts in order to report patient information, to explain the procedure and process to the patient, and to compile and complete technical reports.
- The Sleep Lab is a normal office environment with possible machinery vibrations.
- May be exposed to mechanical or electrical hazards, blood and body fluids as well as infectious diseases due to the nature of the department and patient contact.
- Ability to operate the sleep lab requiring eye‑hand coordination, finger dexterity, near, far, and night vision with extended visual concentration.
- Ability to communicate and understand instructions, information and/or concepts in order to report patient information, to explain the procedure and process to the patient, and to compile and complete technical reports.
