Salary: $20.25 to $25.73 per hour
Location: Barnes Butte Elementary, Prineville, Oregon

Job SummaryUnder direct supervision, the Instructional Assistant provides supported education services in classrooms, resource centers, or other school-related areas. The assistant is directly involved in the instructional program for assigned students and their identified special needs. Responsibilities include supervising students in and out of class, providing small group and one-on-one instruction, and offering general assistance to the teacher. The assistant works independently after becoming familiar with the instructional needs of special‑needs students, seeking clarification for new or unusual situations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Supervise and assist students individually or in small groups in regular and special‑education classes and other school activities as assigned.
- Develop individual lesson plans and strategies with the supervising teacher to maximize learning experiences for special‑needs students.
- Administer informational assessment instruments, score objective tests and papers, and keep appropriate records.
- Assist with implementing individualized education plans (IEP) and record‑keeping to monitor students’ daily and monthly progress.
- Support special‑education teaching staff in the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs.
- Confer as needed with teachers, resource staff, and other personnel concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.
- Alert the teacher to any special problems or information concerning students in the assigned program.
- Participate in parent conferences and staff meetings as invited.
- Assist students with physical therapy and medical emergencies following established protocols.
- Manage student behavior across settings using consistent and positive intervention strategies.
- Assist with the emotional and physical needs of students, including life‑skills such as dressing, toileting, and feeding for students with disability conditions.
- Collaborate with teachers and specialists to develop and evaluate educational goals and objectives.
- Operate office equipment such as a computer and copier, and perform other clerical support duties.
- Access, input, and retrieve information from a computer at a minimum speed of 30 words per minute.
- Learn assigned tasks readily, with minimal supervision, and follow established routines.
- Fulfill other related duties and performance standards as identified in the evaluation process.
- Maintain working conditions and physical effort requirements as listed below.
- Two years of post‑secondary study (or an associate’s degree).
- A passing score on a state or local academic assessment measuring knowledge of reading, writing, and mathematics instruction.
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum two years of school‐related experience (preferable).
- Strong ability to relate well with students, staff, and the public.
- Accurate record‑keeping, transferable information, and clear communication in both oral and written form.
- Basic knowledge of school rules, procedures, and computer technology.
- Knowledge of clerical skills such as typing, operating office machines, and organizing files, including familiarity with test scoring and recording.
- Adherence to federal drug‑free workplace requirements.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Work year: days/years as assigned; work days: 7 hours per day, 180 days.
- Physical ability to attend work regularly and fulfill essential functions with or without accommodation.
- Lifting may be required.
- Work with students having a variety of handicapping conditions in large or small groups or one‑to‑one.
- Supervise students across indoor and outdoor learning environments.
- May encounter bodily fluid spills and removal of soiled clothing.
- May assist in cleaning students.
- Standing and moving rapidly for prolonged periods.
- Work is physically and emotionally demanding due to close interaction with students.
