CROOK COUNTY 911 Overview
Crook County 911 processes emergency and non-emergency calls for Crook County, Oregon. We also provide dispatch services for the Prineville Police Department, Crook County Sheriff's Office, and Crook County Fire and Rescue, coordinating with other local public entities and surrounding jurisdictions.
Hiring Process- Application screening – next review on or about August 4, 2026.
- Criti Call skills testing – qualified applicants will be offered testing August 6‑9, 2026.

Public Safety Call Takers independently answer and process 911 calls and non-emergency requests related to public safety services. Duties include providing safety instructions, making determinations with high liability, documenting calls, and accounting for responder safety. The position reports to the Communications Director, is non-supervisory, and starts at step A on the wage schedule.
Essential Functions / Responsibilities- Handles emergency and non-emergency calls with high sense of urgency and attention to detail.
- Handles requests for service via text, email, or other methods.
- Gathers pertinent information while providing professional, high-quality service.
- Provides safety instructions to callers.
- Remains on the phone with callers as required.
- Communicates with responders via phone, mobile data terminal, and other means.
- Appropriately routes calls outside the jurisdiction to the correct PSAP.
- Places outbound calls as needed.
- Complies with regulations for use of data systems (RMS, DMV, LEDS, NCIC, Interpol, etc.).
- Enters accurate information into computer systems and notifies dispatcher(s) of new or developing information.
- Maintains awareness of field activity and relays information related to responder safety.
- Maintains working knowledge of the geography of the service area and surrounding areas.
- Handles sensitive information and maintains confidentiality.
- Obtains and retains necessary licensing and training.
- Adheres to all city and department policies and state and federal laws.
- Other duties as necessary or assigned.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
Skills and Abilities
- Keyboard accurately by touch at 35 wpm or faster.
- Learn required computer systems, software, and equipment.
- Diagnose and resolve simple computer and equipment issues.
- Monitor five or more computer screens.
- Learn the geographic area, community resources, standard operating procedures, and mutual aid agreements; use maps and location software.
- Excellent listening skills; communicate clearly and elicit needed information from emotionally stressed callers.
- Multitask and switch quickly between tasks.
- Maintain good working relationships with coworkers and the public.
- Remain calm in emergency situations and make accurate, logical decisions quickly.
- Manage stress, exercise discretion, and demonstrate sound judgment.
- Obtain and maintain all required state certifications and licenses within 12 months of hire: DPSST Basic Telecommunicator, DPSST‑Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD), LEDS Entry/Inquiry level, CPR and First Aid.
- Pass a medical examination, including vision, hearing, and drug tests.
- Pass a psychological evaluation.
- Successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation including criminal history check.
- Maintain an Oregon driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (or obtain within 30 days).
- Be a U.S. citizen or obtain citizenship within 12 months of appointment.
- Be at least 19 years of age.
- Work rotating shift schedule, including days, nights, swing, weekends, and holidays.
- Work mandatory overtime with little to no notice and/or respond to emergencies from home when warranted.
