Position Overview

Ensures the safety and security of patients, caregivers, visitors, and property rles Health System. Often called for secure transport of patients in behavioral health crises, facilitating safe transport and supporting ethical standards and crisis management.

Essential Functions and Duties
  • Perform secure transport, assessing restraint needs and securing patients in a caged vehicle per Oregon statutes.
  • Adhere to St. Charles Behavioral Health Code of Ethics and integrity guidelines.
  • Respond to emergency codes, act as security dispatcher, coordinate officer movement and priorities, interact with tracking software, and complete reports.
  • Monitor security cameras and other systems; complete timely reports including code gray debriefs, after‑action reports, and special security reports.
  • Monitor parking, enforce hospital parking rules, and report violations to security leadership.
  • Serve as a front line customer representative, greet patients and visitors, and provide way finding services.
  • Conduct real‑time threat assessments and recommend actions for real or perceived threats.
  • Remove items patients could use to injure themselves or others.
  • Operate vehicle safely, following traffic laws during patient transport.
  • Provide first aid or CPR as appropriate during emergent situations.
  • Complete required documentation per regulatory agencies.
  • Operate metal detector (stationery and handheld) and maintain use within policy.
  • Inspect buildings to ensure security of entrances, departments, and public areas.
  • Provide professional service and direction to patients/families for after‑hours care.
  • Lead de‑escalation support as situations require.
  • Coordinate with admitting and nursing staff to ensure all entrances are monitored.
  • Control crowds during mass casualty events.
  • Monitor cameras, secure doors, respond to alarms related to facility problems.
  • Troubleshoot system issues as trained.
  • Follow safety rules and procedures for work areas.
  • Act as an unlicensed assistive care provider under RN supervision.
  • Support organization’s vision, mission, and values and champion continuous improvement.
  • Maintain a safe environment for caregivers, patients, and guests.
  • Conduct all activities with professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Comply with all laws, regulations, policies, and procedures; report violations and cooperate with investigations.
  • Deliver customer service and/or patient care that promotes goodwill, efficiency, and accuracy.
  • Perform additional duties of similar complexity as assigned.
Education
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Must be willing and able to pass and maintain required classes and/or certifications: ODOT Safe Driver Training (4 hrs once), Workplace Violence Prevention Training (8 hrs annually), Secure Transport Training (4 hrs annually), Handcuffing Tactics (4 hrs annually), Defensive Tactics (8 hrs annually).
Licensure / Certification / Registration
  • Must obtain DPSST Armed/Unarmed Professional certification within 90 days of hire and maintain it.
  • AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Code Gray Training upon hire.
  • Valid Oregon driver’s license and meet SCHS driving requirements.
  • Pass all phases of the initial 6–8 week new officer training curriculum.
Experience
  • Preferred:
    One year of corrections, military, first responder (law enforcement, EMS), behavioral health or related security experience.
  • One year of customer service experience with heavy public contact.
  • Two years of security experience in a hospital setting.
