Job Overview: This position is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the kitchen and ensuring the preparation and delivery of high‑quality, wholesome meals for guests and staff at the SMSC Healing Center. The role includes planning and coordinating meal service, ensuring menus align with the Healing Center’s health and wellness goals, and maintaining the highest standards of food quality, safety, and presentation.

The individual in this position provides guidance, mentorship, and support to kitchen staff, fostering a positive, collaborative, and efficient work environment. This role also ensures compliance with all food safety and sanitation regulations, manages inventory and ordering processes, and continuously seeks opportunities to enhance the nutritional value, flavor, and visual appeal of each meal served. Through leadership and attention to detail, this position plays a vital role in supporting the Healing Center’s mission of providing nourishment that contributes to overall healing and well‑being.

Meal Planning & Preparation:

  • Design and implement weekly menus that offer variety and balance for residents during their anticipated 90‑day stays, emphasizing fresh, minimally processed ingredients.
  • Ensure every meal includes plant‑based alternatives (e.g., grain bowls featuring both meat and vegetarian protein options).
  • Incorporate cultural food traditions and familiar comfort foods while maintaining nutritious, health‑conscious selections.
  • Prepare and oversee the production of wholesome, visually appealing meals that meet individual dietary needs, preferences, and restrictions.
  • Integrate anti‑inflammatory, gut‑healing, and mood‑supportive foods into all aspects of menu planning and meal preparation.
  • Schedule Healing Center cooks effectively based on operational demands and program needs.
  • Partner closely with Senior Leadership of SMSC Food Services and the healthcare team to ensure meals align with residents’ therapeutic, nutritional, and wellness goals.
  • Collaborate on menu development and programming that support the Healing Center’s holistic approach to recovery and well‑being.
  • Provide education and inspiration to residents through cooking demonstrations, informal learning sessions, or mealtime discussions that promote the benefits of mindful, nutritious eating.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe kitchen environment in full compliance with local, state, and federal food safety regulations.
  • Oversee all aspects of inventory management, including ordering, rotation, and proper storage of fresh and dry goods.
  • Ensure consistent portion control, quality assurance, and adherence to operational efficiency standards.
  • Monitor kitchen equipment and coordinate maintenance or repairs as needed to ensure safe and reliable operations.
