Primary

Purpose:

Provide adult students (ages 18-22) receiving Special Education services with learning activities and experiences to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth, with an emphasis on attaining the skills needed to facilitate the successful transition to adult life. This includes providing opportunities to gain community access and increase independent living skills.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate with Special Education certification
Valid Texas driver’s license and driving record that is insurable with Prosper ISD’s insurance carrier

Special Knowledge/Skills

Knowledge of Special Education transition services
Ability to work well with young adults with disabilities
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Knowledge of Admission, Review, & Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting and implementation
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Experience

One year student teaching or approved internship; previous Special Education background preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties Instructional Strategies

Collaborate with students, parents, and other staff to develop IEP through the ARD committee process for each student assigned.

Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.

Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.

Plan for and provide individualized instruction in the classroom, on campus, and in the community that is consistent with a student’s goals for postsecondary life.

Consistently assess student achievement through data collection.

Participate in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis.

Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for instructional aides while working with students in the classroom and community.

Work cooperatively with parents to encourage increasing independence in the home.

Student Growth and Development

Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.

Assume responsibility for community-based and any work-based learning activities in the community.

Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and/or feeding of students as stated in IEP.

Collaborate with district and outside agency resources regarding the transition needs of students.

Be a positive role model for students; support the mission of the school district.

Classroom/Community Management and Organization

Create an instructional environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

Manage student behavior and administer discipline. This includes intervening in crisis situations and physically restraining students as necessary according to IEP.

Consult with district and outside resource contacts regarding education, social, medical, and personal needs of students on related services and behavior as needed and according to IEP.

Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Assist in the selection of instructional materials and equipment.

Communication

Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents/guardians.

Maintain professional relationships with parents/guardians, students, colleagues, and community partners.

Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

Other

Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.

Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for Special Education teachers and in the area of transition.
