Purpose:
AVID tutors play a crucial role in helping students reach their full potential by leading collaborative, subject‑specific tutorial groups that foster independent learning and peer support through Socratic questioning and peer‑learning techniques. AVID, or Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness elective designed to close opportunity gaps for students in the academic middle who aspire to attend college and benefit from additional academic support.
Under the supervision of the principal, AVID Coordinator, and AVID elective teacher, AVID Tutors assist identified students in developing academic skills, promoting higher standards of achievement, and fostering habits of mind that increase postsecondary options upon high school graduation. What sets AVID Tutors apart from other tutors or instructional aides is their specialized training in AVID strategies, which are aimed at enhancing academic performance and preparing students for college success.
In this role, AVID Tutors also serve as mentors and role models, supporting students enrolled in advanced courses with the academic tools and guidance they need to succeed.

- Excellent writing skills; strong analytical and problem‑solving skills

AVID Tutoring is:
- Structured: A process of repeatable steps allows for consistency across models; teachers, tutors, and students are trained on, reflective of, and continually coached in that process.
- Student‑Centered and Safe: All tutorial models are built on a foundation of relational capacity so that students feel supported while seeking solutions.
- Inquiry‑Based: Tutors and peers ask higher‑order questions instead of offering answers.
- Collaborative: Peers use their collective agency to resolve points of confusion and support each other.
- Equitable: Defined roles and responsibilities ensure equal participation.
- Metacognitive: Students identify where they are confused, and then summarize their new learning and reflect on the process.

- Participate in all required trainings, professional development sessions, and meetings.
- Tutor students in small study groups, assisting them in all subject areas based on the class and text notes they have collected in their AVID binders.
