About the RoleThe Production Manager, Community Programs reports to the Director of Production of the Brown Arts Institute (BAI) and is responsible for overseeing the production needs and schedules for all performances, exhibitions, special events, and workshops invited to campus by the BAI, to include both on‑ and off‑campus venues.
Brown University is experiencing tremendous growth in the arts. An experienced, creative, and collaborative Production Manager will play a pivotal role in the future success of the Brown Arts Institute. The Production Manager must enjoy collegial, collaborative relationships with their immediate colleagues in the BAI Production Department, as well as other members of the BAI staff. In addition to working with community artists and arts organizations, the Production Manager will work closely with the Associate Director of Partnerships and Engagement to ensure that access to BAI resources is transparent, equitable, and in keeping with the University's overall community engagement goals.
Open lines of communication are of the utmost importance, as the BAI programs are vast, complex, and often politically sensitive.
- Oversee production needs and schedules for all performances, exhibitions, special events, and workshops invited to campus by the BAI.
- Collaborate with community artists and arts organizations.
- Work closely with the Associate Director of Partnerships and Engagement to ensure transparent and equitable access to BAI resources.
- Maintain open lines of communication with stakeholders and navigate politically sensitive contexts.
- BA or BFA or equivalent combination of education and experience –
Required - BA or BFA in technical theater or related field –
Preferred - 3+ years in technical theater management, stage management, or performance art‑related field
- Proven success in production/project management
- Broad skill‑set including experience in audio, video, lighting, and signal routing
- Demonstrated competency in professional artistic practice to appropriately communicate with a wide array of creative professionals (e.g., faculty, visiting artists)
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to prioritize and multitask
- Strategic thinking with an eye to long‑term planning
- Ability to remain cool‑headed when faced with challenges
- Proven verbal & written communication skills and a flexible style to accommodate diverse priorities
- Experience in installation and fabrication – a plus
