Communication Control Officer

Communications Control Officer responsible for receiving, routing, dispatching service requests through the Communication Center, maintaining accurate status of field units, monitoring radio frequencies, managing alarm systems, maintaining logs, initiating CAD system entries, and performing routine clerical tasks.

Responsibilities
  • Operate base station radio system following FCC regulations and dispatch field units concerning incidents and service requests.
  • Initiate CAD system input for all Communication Center information to inform departments and supervisors.
  • Maintain accurate radio logs for the tour of duty via the CAD system.
  • Monitor radio, telephone, security and fire alarms, and public safety status of the university and surrounding community.
  • Assess significance of communications, prioritize and initiate action per established policies and procedures.
  • Maintain all logs and files; provide information to university members and guests; maintain professional demeanor.
  • Control keys of various organizations per written procedures; manage key cabinet with University Lock Shop.
  • Monitor Providence Police and Fire Department radio frequencies and rebroadcast relevant information to patrol officers.
Qualifications
  • Vocal tone and diction compatible with radio and telephone systems; effective communication over law enforcement radio channels.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and handle a multi-phase position.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, including with juveniles, to give information and directions.
  • Strong typing and computer skills.
  • Ability to prepare reports, including sketches, with proper grammar, symbols and mathematics.
  • Minimum 18 years of age and high school diploma or GED.
  • Pass a physical examination administered by the university.
  • No felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.
  • Pass a criminal background investigation.
  • Successfully complete the Department's Communication Control Officer training program.
  • Successfully complete a 12-month probationary period (6 months if promoted).
  • Successfully pass skills assessment for dispatching (listening and written).
