  • The number of available positions is contingent on student enrollment and funding.
  • Candidates must upload a resume, cover letter, and the most recent unofficial transcript, in addition to providing three references. In the cover letter, identify three subjects from the Required Qualifications that the candidate is qualified to tutor.
  • A Tutor Counselor may be assigned to tutor up to three classes.
  • Salary range: $3,000 to $4,000 (all applicable taxes will be deducted).
  • Board: will be provided Monday through Friday (excluding July
    6).
  • Housing will be available for the duration of employment.
  • Fringe benefits include health insurance, which will only be available from June 29 to August 7 and will be secondary to the employee’s health plan.
  • Applicants offered a Tutor Counselor position must submit their official college transcript in a sealed envelope by May 29th.
  • Foreign citizens working in the U.S. under a visa should note that this is a short-term position, and Rhode Island College will not sponsor any type of work-authorization visa.
  • Before finalizing employment, this position requires successful completion of a background check, which may include, but is not limited to, verification of education, employment history, and a criminal and sex offender record check. The employee must also submit specific forms required by the RI College Human Resources Office.

Position Overview

The Upward Bound Program at Rhode Island College is a federally funded program for rising 10, 11, and 12 grade college-bound high school students. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the high school graduation, college-going, and college graduation rates of program participants.

This summer program seeks to cultivate a community that prioritizes academic excellence, personal growth, and student accountability. Participants reside in a dormitory at RIC, where they are supervised by the team of tutor counselors. Throughout the program, students take high school courses in literature and writing, mathematics, science, and SAT preparation. They may also participate in introductory level courses in foreign languages, dance, and STEM courses.

Beyond academic coursework, the program provides social, recreational, cultural, and field trip activities for students to engage in exploration.

We seek dedicated individuals to serve as Tutor Counselors, providing mentorship, supervision, and academic support to high school participants in a dynamic residential program.

Employment Period

June 14 – August 8 (Full-time, residential).

Full participation is required during the following outlined dates:

  • June 15 – June 26:
    Monday through Friday during orientation / training, including evenings.
  • Sunday evening through Friday evenings when students are on campus. No classes July 6 (in observance of Independence Day).
  • All Tutor Counselors must reside in a campus residential hall and share a suite with a group of 7 – 10 Upward Bound high school students. Their primary responsibilities include mentoring, supervising, and tutoring the summer program participants.
  • Tutor Counselors must be available during into the night hours to supervise students, in addition to their assigned daytime duties. The residential schedule runs from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, and residential staff are not permitted to leave the campus while students are on campus.
