TAPA is an academically rigorous public charter school for the arts. The Middle School English Language Arts Teacher will teach a combined 7th and 8th grade English Language Arts course that integrates reading, writing, speaking, listening, language, and literacy development. The role includes implementing EL Education curriculum, supporting instruction aligned with Rhode Island’s Science of Reading expectations, and fostering student achievement.
Key Responsibilities- Plan and deliver instruction for four combined 7th & 8th grade classes, each with approximately 20 students.
- Integrate arts into English Language Arts instruction while maintaining the structure of the EL Education curriculum.
- Implement evidence‑based reading and writing practices aligned with the Science of Reading.
- Support multilingual learners and students with disabilities by modifying and scaffolding instruction.
- Lead an advisory group to provide social‑emotional learning and support for middle‑school students, building consistency, care, and trust.
- Use assessment data and continuous feedback to meet individual student needs and meet Rhode Island graduation requirements.
- Collaborate with staff to embed literacy instruction across the arts‑integrated curriculum.
- Rhode Island teaching certification in English Language Arts, Middle Grades English Language Arts, or another qualifying area for Middle School English Language Arts.
- Meeting or will meet Rhode Island’s Right to Read Act requirement for Science of Reading and Structured Literacy awareness for Middle Grade teachers.
- Experience with a high‑quality English Language Arts curriculum, preferably EL Education or a structured, standards‑aligned literacy curriculum.
- Understanding of evidence‑based reading and writing instruction.
- Commitment to effective teaching and learning in urban public schools, specifically with middle school students.
- Ability to create a classroom environment that respects students from diverse cultural, linguistic, academic, socioeconomic, and personal backgrounds.
- Ability to integrate curriculum within and between the arts and English Language Arts.
- Knowledge of a student‑centered approach to teaching and learning.
- Ability to modify and scaffold curriculum for multilingual learners and students with disabilities without compromising rigor.
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
- At least 1 year of relevant experience (preferred).
- Bachelor degree preferred.
- At least one year of experience working in an urban school environment or lived experience in an urban school environment.
- Experience implementing EL Education or another structured English Language Arts curriculum.
- Experience supporting middle‑school students in reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary development, and comprehension.
- Understanding of classroom practices that build strong relationships, student belonging, accountability, and repair.
- Proficiency in conversational Spanish.
- Knowledge of using Chromebooks in a 1:1 educational setting.
- Participation in the Rhode Island arts community.
