The Elementary Art Teacher fosters creativity, self-expression, and confidence in students through engaging visual arts instruction. The teacher creates a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment where all students can explore artistic techniques, cultural connections, and creative problem‑solving. The Art Teacher works collaboratively with classroom teachers and staff to integrate the arts across the curriculum and provide meaningful learning experiences.
Key ResponsibilitiesInstruction & Student Learning
- Plan and deliver standards-based visual arts instruction for students in grades elementary grades.
- Develop lessons that encourage creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and self-expression.
- Teach a variety of artistic techniques, media, and art history concepts using accessible and resourceful materials.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic, social, and emotional needs of students.
- Create a classroom environment that is safe, inclusive, culturally responsive, and student-centered.
- Encourage student voice, creativity, and pride in artistic work.
Collaboration & School Community
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate art into literacy, social studies, science, and school wide initiatives.
- Partner with colleagues on interdisciplinary projects, performances, displays, and school events.
- Support school culture through student showcases, bulletin boards, murals, assemblies, and community art projects.
- Build positive relationships with students, families, and staff.
Classroom & Resource Management
- Organize and maintain art supplies and classroom materials efficiently and creatively.
- Utilize low-cost, recycled, and donated materials to support high-quality art experiences.
- Maintain an orderly, engaging, and visually inspiring classroom space.
- Follow all school procedures related to safety, supervision, and student behavior.
Assessment & Professional Responsibilities
- Assess student growth and participation through projects, portfolios, and classroom performance.
- Maintain accurate student records and communicate student progress with families and staff.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and collaborative planning opportunities.
- Reflect on instructional practices and seek innovative approaches to arts education in an urban school setting.
- Bachelor’s degree in Art Education or related field.
- Valid state teaching certification/licensure in Art Education.
- Experience working with elementary-aged students preferred.
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive teaching practices.
- Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills.
- Believes all children are artists and capable of creative success.
- Is flexible, innovative, and resourceful in a limited-resource environment.
- Values collaboration and interdisciplinary learning.
- Builds strong connections with students and families.
- Brings energy, positivity, and creativity to the school community.
